Having once read Sofya Prokofieva's play "Conversation Without a Witness" in the Theater magazine, Ulyanov, remembering how in a recent conversation with him he expressed a desire to put on some kind of performance at the "Vakhtangovites", suggested that he take up this particular play.

In the midst of rehearsals, Mikhalkov unexpectedly announced that he was offered to make a film based on this play: “Two actors, one scenery. The studio has money. I think we can. And most importantly, there is an opportunity to make a film and make a play. And maybe release at the same time. Can you imagine how tempting it is? However, the theater management considered Nikita Sergeyevich's changeability to be unethical and stopped work on the performance.

Filming began in 1983. "Without Witnesses", in which Ulyanov played one of his few negative film roles. Ulyanov's partner was Irina Kupchenko, the whole plot unfolded in a simple Soviet apartment. In the course of the film, the teeth of the hero Mikhail Alexandrovich grew and the shape of the skull changed - this was Mikhalkov's plan, with the help of make-up, the transformation of the main character from a respectable person into a real monster was emphasized. According to Mikhail Alexandrovich, he never received as many angry letters as he received after the release of the picture. “Why is Ulyanov playing like that? Did he lose his conscience, began to play so cheekily, so insolently? - some viewers wrote, others, without hesitation, called the actor a scoundrel, a scoundrel and a bastard.

In the next two years, Ulyanov once again played the role of Marshal Zhukov in the films "Victory", "Battle for Moscow" and "Counterstrike". Elena Ulyanova: Difficult! actually was my dream. When I was in Tara for the first time and they showed me the house where my father spent his childhood, and by that time he had already passed away, my heart ached: both from pain and from joy. I realized that a museum should be opened here. I was told that it was very expensive, but the thought stuck in my head. Very quickly there were people willing to help. For example, Peter Wiebe, director of the local history museum, just got excited about this idea. I did not expect that the exposition will be made in such a short time. Moreover, they created carefully, accurately, sincerely, competently. She was made out of enthusiasm, love and a special relationship with Mikhail Ulyanov. This is what amazes me the most. Although there are few exhibits, it turned out to be a real museum. The lowest bow Petru Vibe for his spirit. At the opening of the museum, I experienced delight, admiration and sincere gratitude.

- You brought a lot of personal belongings of your father as a gift to the museum. Isn't it a pity to part with family heirlooms?

I am extremely sorry to part with my father's things. When, after a small fire, I was doing repairs in the apartment of my parents, who had lived there since 1974, I tried to leave everything as it was during their lifetime. It was important for me to preserve the atmosphere of this actor's apartment, where a huge number of photographs, posters hang on the walls, and on the shelves there are various gifts, figurines. I even picked up the same wallpapers that were during the life of mom and dad. Sometimes I come to this apartment and sit in my father's cabin. And to be honest, I will never part with some iconic items for me. But for the museum, although with pain in my heart, I will give those things that will be of interest to the Tarchans. After all, the museum must live, and the things of the father will feed it with their energy. Most likely, I will give my father's old suitcase, which appeared in his books.

About old times and broken roads

Mikhail Alexandrovich often said the phrase "I'm always torn to Tara." You first visited here only after the death of your father. Have you managed to understand over the years why your father was always so eager to go to the Siberian hinterland?

For dad, Tara was very dear. In fact, he often said: "I'm always torn to Tara." Here he spent his happiest years, here he got acquainted with the theater, art, creativity. This is his home. In one of his last books there is a rather long story about the childhood that passed in Tara, about the teachers. I understand why dad treasured this place so much. There is a completely different aura here. I feel in my heart that I am also from here and that this is my small homeland too. I have repeatedly repeated and will repeat once again that Siberians are a special caste of people. They are so easy and friendly to all requests that you just do not know how to behave.

The atmosphere of antiquity in Tara, of course, is felt. But if you soberly assess the state of the city, then it would not hurt to modernize it long ago. After all, we are in the 21st century, and everything in Tara remains the same as it was decades ago - old, wooden and falling apart.

Today, in its historicism, Tara is simply a unique city. Few places have such tiny, carved houses, old streets. I think that we should try to restore the Tara fortress, restore the old buildings. It is necessary to leave a piece of history in the city that will attract tourists. In such places you feel the spirit of the city, even if there are new buildings nearby. On my first visit to Tara, I stopped by the Bolsherechensky Museum "Old Siberian", because it is interesting to me. If you create something similar in Tara, the city will develop. Although I see that the local administration is already trying its best. It is clear that the daily life of people in the epicenter of history is impossible. It is necessary to expand the outskirts, this is done in almost every city. Yes, in Tara, historicism prevails over new housing and it is necessary to attract some kind of financial flows. Including tourism.

When you first came to Tara, you rightly noted that the way there is practically a journey to the ends of the world. The roads in those places were called the worst roads in Russia according to the federal "AiF", although it seems that the locals have long been accustomed to the main trouble of the country ...

It is impossible to get used to such roads. Even if you know that they are terrible and prepare for it mentally and physically. The road is awesome! I often travel around Russia, but I only saw such pits and potholes on the way to Tara. The most tragic thing is that the road in this direction is the only one and there is no other way to get to Tara. Only crazy enthusiasts or fanatics like me would dare to go there. Well, at least they would fix it, or something. At least some holes were patched up.

"There are enough good people"

I know that in Moscow you have a fund to help elderly theater and film artists, and that there is nothing else like it in Russia. Why did you take it on?

- The Foundation is engaged in support and assistance to artists, former favorites of the public. He helps everyone who is in trouble. There is something similar in Moscow Masha Mironova and Zhenya Mironov, but their activities are slightly different. In my fund, apart from an assistant and an accountant, there is no one else. I am trying to help those people whom I have known since childhood, who are now getting old and sick. The Foundation is also engaged in publishing activities, erects monuments. But the future, which I want to install in Omsk for the 300th anniversary of the city, will not relate to the activities of the foundation and not a penny will be taken from it. This is my initiative as a daughter.

- Is it difficult now to erect a monument to former idols?

The installation process of the monument is very complicated and insanely expensive. This requires great knowledge and skills. It’s good that at least from the artistic side everything is fine with me, since I am an artist. In all other respects - a hell of a job, honestly!

Especially today, when nobody needs anything. And few people want to part with money for some kind of monuments to some artists. But AiF also helps me in this, we periodically have joint projects. I am engaged in the installation of monuments when the family of a famous person does not have the opportunity to do this, because there is no money. So there was a monument to Starygin, Innocent, a memorial plaque to Zhzhenov, and so on.

- It seems to me that only in our country, artists at the end of their lives are forgotten and useless.

We have a good life for pop artists, but for dramatic actors who no longer have the opportunity to act or play somewhere, it’s very bad. They live on one pension. And this is only in our country. We have actors, even great ones, sometimes receive penny salaries and live very hard. My next project is to help the once famous singer Olga Voronets, who is seriously ill. Recently, her leg was amputated, there is no money for treatment, but she needs it. Now I, most likely through the Moscow AiF, will try to raise the necessary funds. I have no money in the fund, they appear only for some specific purpose.

- Is there money for good and necessary deeds?

Yes, but less and less each time. Although there are still good people in Russia. It is very touching when those who responded send 100 rubles, 200 rubles, 3,000 thousand rubles each ... Basically, these are people who are not indifferent and compassionate. And Russia is strong precisely with such people.
