An effective remedy for dogs on the street. Dog protection

The dog is man's best friend. We have known this thesis since childhood. However, what happens to those dogs that are suddenly betrayed by their human friend and put out on the street? They huddle in packs and try to survive by all means available to them. To do this, nature rewarded them with powerful jaws and strong paws. An embittered, starved animal is capable of many things, including murder.

To protect oneself from a wild pack of street dogs, a person has come up with many means of protection - stun guns, ultrasonic repellers and gas cartridges. Which of them are the most effective? Let's try to figure it out.

stun gun is a melee weapon. Of course, the exception is the police "taser", which shoots electrodes over long distances, but it is not available to civilians. To use a conventional stun gun when attacked by a dog, you must be in direct contact with it. The current passed through the dog's body causes pain but no more. If the dog is set up aggressively and attacks without being frightened by the loud discharges of the stun gun, then the pain will not stop it either.

ultrasonic repeller emits a signal of a certain frequency, audible only to dogs. It affects the nervous system of the animal, causing discomfort, anxiety and pain. Perhaps such a means of protection is the most humane. The animal will most likely just run away from you. However, there is a possibility of even greater aggression towards you.

In our opinion, the most optimal means of protection against dogs is gas spray with pepper gas (OS - oleresin capsicum - hot pepper extract). It can be used at a sufficient distance from the dog. Irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and mouth of the animal, caused by the action of the gas, will disorient the dog and give you a margin of time to evade the attack. You need to aim the gas canister at the dog's nose - this is its most sensitive area.

In any case, remember that your goal is defense, not offense. Having avoided the threat, you should not continue to use the self-defense tool on the animal. Just leave the dangerous place as quickly as possible.

Dog attacks on humans are a common occurrence from which no one is immune. And if an adult can still somehow defend himself or run away, then for a child such a meeting with angry animals can cost health and even life. And a stick or stone may not be at hand at the right time, and it takes time to find and raise them, which may simply not be there.

That is why in Russia they are gaining popularity dog attack protection: gas cartridges, stun guns, flashlights with directional light and ultrasonic dog repellers.

Which way to deal with dogs to choose?

The attack of these four-legged can be conditionally divided into single and pack.

  • In the first case, it can be a stray dog or a pet that suddenly got angry or was deliberately let down by the owner.
  • In the second, it is usually a yard pack that can attack a person if he is very hungry or considers that he threatens the well-being of one of its members.

Usually at this moment there comes a stupor and an acute desire to run away. If you are a very fast runner, then you might be able to do something. You can also call for help and fight back with something, or use special tools.

Gas cartridges, stun guns and flashlights

These devices in Russia can be purchased in specialized stores or on our website. They are effective in a single dog attack, when you have only one opponent to hit and buy yourself time to retreat from a dangerous place.

Consider the following when purchasing dog repellents.

  1. Not all gas cartridges are suitable for dogs. The fact is that many models are sold in stores that are universal in self-defense. But the fact is that the pain defect in humans and animals is different. In addition, fighting dogs have a higher resistance to various stimuli than their other relatives. Therefore, purchase cans in which the gas mixture is aimed at fighting specifically with the dog.
  2. The effectiveness of stun guns and flashlights depends on their power and the individual pain tolerance of the animal. Be sure to check the battery or battery level before going outside.
  3. It is better to buy flashlights that have a strong directional beam of light, and can also work in flicker mode. And remember that you only have a few seconds to escape after you blind the dog with the light.

Tasers are also sold on the Russian market along with powerful flashlights. These devices, for the most part, are aimed at general self-defense, regardless of who is attacking.

Ultrasonic dog repellers

Very effective protection against dogs, regardless of the number of individuals in it. In addition, he can prevent the attack itself by scaring away the dogs. How? Very simple.

  • The device generates ultrasonic pulses. which scare away animals from the source (the operation of the device is safe for humans).
  • Depending on the power, the range can reach 10-15 meters.
  • Works on all breeds of dogs.

... The fifth shogun in the Tokugawa dynasty was Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, nicknamed "Inukubo", the dog shogun. Inukubo had no heirs - his only son died at a young age, and the Buddhist monk explained this by the fact that the shogun in one of his past lives harmed the dog. Since then, the feeble-minded samurai has turned to animal protection. A series of animal welfare laws gave mutts far more rights than humans had. For example, if a flock of dogs destroys crops in a rice field, then the peasants first had to ritually swear that not a single dog would be harmed, then, with caresses and persuasion, ask the flock to leave the field, not to scream so that the dogs would not have an attack. If this happens, they bury the dog in the presence of special officials who record everything.

The population was funny until the population of the village, who dared to protect their crops, was executed.
A special decree created a register of stray dogs, followed by the construction of a giant kennel for 50,000 heads, in which the dogs received three meals a day, amounting to 1.5 peasant rations.

Having met a dog on the street, it was necessary to address her as "lady dog", otherwise the disrespectful passer-by was punished with sticks. There was also a case of the execution of a peasant who incorrectly caught a fish (it hurt her) and sending wandering samurai into exile for eating a pigeon.

The power of the shogunate almost fell as a result of such laws. After Tsunayoshi's death, all the stupid laws were repealed...

Self defense against dogs is a harsh reality.

Something similar is happening now in Russia. Through the efforts of inadequate people, stray dogs have been turned into saints, because "neglected and stray animals are an integral part of the urban ecological environment and are protected by state authorities." This means that there is no more trapping and “regulation of the population”, now dogs are caught, sterilized and released into the street, into their natural habitat. The only thing that is not taken into account is that rabies is contagious for dogs, regardless of whether they have genitals, and they attack passers-by, to be honest, not at all for rape.

Not only authorities protect dogs. Compassionate grandmothers feed dogs, champions of justice sue those who dared to fight off an attacking dog, recalling Art. 245 of the Criminal Code "On cruelty to animals ... for sadistic, hooligan or mercenary purposes."

What is the result?

  • In 2004, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a gang ate a homeless person. Attacked, bitten and eaten. The city also recorded attacks on children on the territory of schools and kindergartens.
  • In the same year, a pack of 30 cannibal dogs appeared in the north of Moscow, led by a half-wolf. Law enforcement agencies began searching for her only when several people were eaten.
  • In the village of Gorodishche, Volgograd region, it got to the point that the dogs almost disrupted the elections. Postmen refused to work, pensioners refused to go outside. Dogs simply eat people.
  • In Ulan-Ude last year, 1,500 people asked for help with bites, and 3,000 people in the Arkhangelsk region.
  • In the Ivanovo region, the pit bull killed the owner.
  • In Kamchatka, two dogs ate an 11-year-old girl.
  • In Krasnoyarsk, a dog bit a 2-year-old girl.
  • In the Ryazan region, a Staffordshire Terrier bit the head of a 3-year-old girl.
  • In the Sverdlovsk region, a shepherd dog attacked an electric train driver while the train was moving (!)
  • In Moscow, according to ecologists, in recent years there have been so many stray dogs that they have destroyed the entire fauna. Almost all roe deer, elk and deer are eaten in the Losiny Ostrov park. In Serebryany Bor, populations of hedgehogs, hares and frogs have been destroyed.
  • The state does not intend to deal with the problem, therefore, in self-defense from dogs, you can only rely on yourself.

According to the latest data, at the beginning of 2009 in Moscow alone, more than 20,000 stray dogs roam the streets. A lot of people tend to be aggressive. Under these conditions, self-defense from dogs in a modern city is a very relevant and sometimes vital task. You have to learn specific self-defense techniques.

How to avoid dog attacks?

  1. Try to avoid ports, industrial zones and wastelands. Often attacks are made when a person, without knowing it, enters the territory “assigned” to a dog pack.
  2. Do not trust unfamiliar dogs.
  3. A mad dog attacks almost always and for no reason. The rabies virus causes sudden mood swings - the dog can come up wagging his tail, and then suddenly grab his throat. Wagging a dog's tail is not a sign of its friendly mood towards you, but only an indicator of the degree of its arousal. The higher the tail, the more “wound up” the dog, and what feelings it has towards you, you will find out in the very near future.
  4. Be carefull. The cyclist is a favorite target of both domestic and wild dogs. Especially in spring and autumn, when hormones are raging in dogs. A dozen males rush after a bitch in heat, and each of them seeks to demonstrate their valiant prowess, attacking everything that moves. It is not recommended to run from the pack or stand in its way.
  5. A bitch with puppies is doubly dangerous. Seeing her, it is better to leave immediately, with a calm step. Don't run!

Dog self-defense equipment

A knife is absolutely ineffective if you do not know how to use it. A dog is a dodgy and fast animal, its pain threshold is much higher than that of a person, so it will continue to attack even after many minor wounds, and a layman is unlikely to be able to inflict a serious wound or an injection into a painful point without skill. Knife fighting against a dog is difficult, and even if you manage to get the dog with a knife, it is usually after a few painful bites.
I dare to still offer a few tips for people familiar with the technique of owning a knife for self-defense. Simple cuts will not be able to stop the dog, the technique of fighting with a knife against a dog has its own specifics: strong, quick blows should be applied to the neck and belly. It is advisable to hit the lateral surfaces of the neck - the carotid artery, this will lead to a quick "turn off" of the beast. If possible, inject into the front surface of the neck - the respiratory tract will be affected. An attempt to prick a dog in the neck from behind can lead to the blade getting stuck in the cervical vertebrae and losing the knife. Another technique with a knife is injections into the chest, the knife should be placed with the blade vertically, perpendicular to the surface of the earth, making it easier for it to penetrate through the ribs and cross the main blood vessels and the heart. When removing a knife from a wound, rotate the blade around its axis to enhance the damaging effect. It is better to remove the knife with a counter push to the chest with the palm of your hand or foot, as if pushing the beast away from you, pulling it off the blade.

Self-defense against a dog clinging to an arm or leg

Do not rush to pull the limb out of the mouth (this is fraught with even greater traumatism of already damaged tissues), but grab the mouth with your free hand, pressing the dog to you, going “for a bite”. By forcibly pressing your hand or foot into the mouth of the animal “to break” the jaw, you block her breathing, as the wide tongue moves back from the mouth to the throat and makes it difficult to breathe. After a few seconds, the dog will begin to try to escape, and then several options are possible.

  • Option 1. You did not let go and managed to hold it for more than 50 seconds. You will most likely suffocate the animal.
  • Option 2. The dog escaped. Now she will never throw herself at you again, because you are DANGEROUS in her mind. Maximum - oblaet at a distance.
  • Option 3. Put your left hand forward, if you have time, wrap something around it. When the dog clings to the forearm, put your right hand on the back of his head, press it to you, push your left hand as deep as possible into the mouth and, pressing mainly on the upper jaw, pull up and to the right. After the neck cracks, carefully lower the corpse of the dog to the ground, slowly, to prevent further damage to the muscles and skin, remove your hand from the mouth. Check yourself for venous and arterial bleeding. Seek immediate medical attention.

When defending against dog attacks, you can use permitted weapons. A traumatic gun does not give any results at all, it only angers the dog even more. It can only work when a wasp is shot at point blank range in the head, but dogs do not stand still during an attack, and there are often more individuals in a flock than cartridges in a magazine. A stun gun is also not the best self-defense weapon. Tasers allowed in Russia cannot stop even a field mouse.

The “Strike” device is unreliable, you can not get into the dog with a jet of pepper, so aerosol sprays are much better.

A gas canister is the most effective and most humane means of self-defense. The spray must be pepper (OC, IPC), cans of the Cheryomukha type (CS, CN) are ineffective against dogs. The spray can should be directed towards the pack and release a large cloud of substance, then the dogs will instantly lose all interest in you. The most effective means of self-defense is the PA-2 pepper spray gun.

The pistol is a plastic case in the form factor of a pistol, into which a can of pepper mixture is inserted. The device is equipped with a good atomizer and forms a powerful wide jet of aerosol. It allows, unlike a spray can, to conduct "aimed fire", with a range of up to 2.5 meters.

My own PA-2 is mounted on a bicycle frame, it helps a lot in protecting against dog attacks, allows you to shoot back from packs without even slowing down. The dogs freeze and begin, whining, rubbing their faces on the asphalt.

Issue price - 600 rubles, 150 - spare cartridges.

Attention! If you accidentally killed a dog that attacked you, then you don’t need to cut off its head and carry it to the emergency room for analysis! Breaking a skull with a stone and extracting a piece of the brain - too! For a hundred years, they have learned to determine rabies by a blood test (not a dog's, but yours).

What to do if you are bitten by a dog?

  1. Immediately wash the wound (injury site) - intensively, for 10 minutes, with soap (it washes away the saliva of the animal).
  2. Immediately, immediately go to the nearest emergency room. The success of rabies prevention is highly dependent on how quickly you seek help.
  3. Have the following information ready:
  • The type and description of the animal (including its appearance and behavior).
  • Was the pet wearing a collar or leash?
  • Familiar or unfamiliar animal?
  • Circumstances under which the bite occurred.
  • In which direction did the animal run?

What bites are the most dangerous?

The farther from the brain the bite site is, the more likely it is to prevent rabies, the longer the incubation period of the infection, which is nothing more than the time it takes for the virus to “journey” from the bite site, along the nerves, to the brain. More dangerous are bites, accompanied by bleeding, and sedimentation (if abrasions, scratches remain). The most dangerous are multiple bites to the head and neck. Less dangerous are such injuries as salivation (licking) of intact skin by sick animals.
How can rabies be prevented? Only with the help of vaccines and immunoglobulins.

Vaccination is "40 injections in the stomach"?

No. This is a hopelessly outdated stereotype. Such vaccines no longer exist. Modern vaccines are administered only 5 or 6 times, some more often, but still not 40 times and not in the stomach. However, the domestic CAV vaccine is indeed recommended to be injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen.

Many dangers await a person on the street, among which stray dogs occupy an important place. From childhood, a person was told that a dog is a man’s friend, however, not all animals were lucky enough to live in a house with devoted owners.

Getting into a bad society, a man's friend turns into a vicious predator with powerful jaws and paws. A tired animal is capable of many things, in particular, to attack and cripple a person. According to statistics, the largest number of attacks occur on a small child and teenagers. Very often dogs attack a cyclist. Approximately 70 percent of all cases occur in children. In this regard, the issue of protection against homeless animals is currently relevant for residents of cities and villages. The law allows you to protect yourself from dogs by any means.

What is the right thing to do in such a situation and protect yourself from the attack of stray dogs? What are the main ways to effectively protect against dogs? To do this, people have come up with many different means. Protection from dogs is represented by stun guns, gas cartridges and ultrasonic repellers.

Before proceeding to the description of the means of protection, it is necessary to understand the psychology of the animal. Attacking animals are unpredictable. Knowing the main causes of an animal attack allows you to correctly and timely prevent an unnecessary conflict.

So, experts identify the following main reasons:

  1. Protecting your own space and food. In the event that during an attack, then it indicates to a person that he has entered someone else's territory. In such a situation, it is necessary to slowly but surely move away from the animal to a safe distance.
  2. Disease. However, if a dog literally rushes at a person without making a single sound, then the person is in danger. It can provoke an attack on the part of the dog. At the same time, it is very difficult to recognize the disease at an early stage.
  3. sports interest.

A person should try with all his might to avoid the undesirable from the side of the animal. However, if aggression and collision cannot be prevented, the above personal protective equipment comes to the rescue. A very large percentage of people are bitten due to the fact that they ride a bicycle. They usually bite on the legs.

Another important point is to try to resolve the conflict and get rid of dog bites without resorting to radical methods.

Protection from aggressive dogs can also be performed on a psychological level. Each person must remember one rule - in no case should you shout or wave your arms. The dog feels fear and becomes even more nervous and angry. The person must make it clear to the dog who is in charge in this situation and who will emerge victorious from it. You can also influence the dog on a psychological level. One of these methods of influence is a growl like a dog. You don't have to be really armed. It is enough to have a stick or a stone at hand.

In most cases, these objects bring up unpleasant memories in the dog that he would not like to relive. Effective attack relief is available only to strong people, in most cases, men. In parallel with this, the larger the dog, the harder it is to fight with it. In this regard, physical techniques are not available for children and women. Here it is necessary to use other approaches.

Of course, not everyone will be able to quickly navigate in such a situation and make the right decision. Therefore, the characteristics of personal protective equipment will be given below.

All dog protection products are divided into the following categories:

  • Henchmen.
  • Mechanical.
  • Chemical.
  • Shooting.
  • Electrical and ultrasonic.

The means at hand were briefly mentioned above, so we will not stop our eyes on them. As for mechanical means, they are represented by piercing and beating objects. Of course, in popularity in the first place is a hunting knife. However, the presence of such weapons may be of interest to the police. So it is better not to take risks and choose a more affordable option. Common household appliances can come to the rescue. These include forks, nails, and so on.

Chemical dog repellents boast a wide selection of gas cartridges. However, a person should be aware that a dog does not always react negatively to nerve gas. For dogs, canisters filled with pepper and mustard gas are specially sold. The mere presence of a gas canister is not enough. It also needs to be directed correctly. All chemical protection against dog attacks is directed directly towards the mouth and nose. The disadvantages of such protective equipment are represented by the inability to use against the wind.

Shooting means of protection are divided into three types:

  • Chemical.
  • Traumatic.
  • Fire.

Traumatic weapons are ineffective, as they require care and accuracy. The law allows you to carry a traumatic weapon. Compared to traumatic weapons, fire weapons are characterized by efficiency. However, again, it is used exclusively in open areas.

Electrical safety equipment includes stun guns. They are used exclusively as melee weapons. The main blow of the stun gun falls on the neck and chest. However, such devices are not effective against long-haired dog breeds.

New

The latest invention in this area is a weapon called. Its action is based on the production of a powerful ultrasound beam, which is absolutely safe for humans. However, it is this beam that scares the animal, and stops the desire to attack a person. In the event of a dog attacking a person, it is enough to direct the device towards the villain.

So the rules are:

  1. The safe distance is 15 meters. It is this distance that is considered safe, since the animal does not feel danger from humans. In the event that a person managed to enter the 15-meter zone, then dog handlers advise not to move sharply and, in general, not to express any emotions.
  2. The first thing the victim must do, so to speak, is to move slowly but surely away from the dog. Under no circumstances should you run. As you know, only a criminal who must be caught and punished starts running.
  3. Cynologists advise to behave confidently and boldly look into the eyes of a predator.

In conclusion, I would like to draw attention to a very important point. Each person must learn to restrain his fear when meeting with a formidable predator. It is important to play in your head the course of your further actions and correctly calculate your strength.

Firearms and traumatic weapons.

First, serious weapons require a permit. Secondly, dogs have a low pain threshold and are able to attack even after several minor wounds, and not everyone can hit a moving dog in the head. Knives and clubs in the absence of special skills are ineffective for the same reason.

Gas bottles.

Gas canisters are very effective at repelling dogs, but they have their drawbacks. Dogs' sensitive sense of smell, in this case, is their Achilles' heel. Only gas cartridges with red pepper extract (marked with CO or CO + CS) have an effect on the sense of smell.

The disadvantages are a small radius of damage and a delay in the reaction, tk. The irritating effect of pepper appears after a couple of seconds. In a situation where events are developing rapidly, these seconds can be important.

And yet, everything is not so sad, and in most cases, the owners of gas cartridges successfully avoid encountering the teeth of dogs.

A guaranteed means of protection against aggressive dogs is a stun gun.

Why a stun gun?

stun gun, in fact, is a "pocket zipper". Fear of a lightning discharge is inherent in animals by nature and no training can help overcome it. According to dog breeders, the smell of ozone and the crackle of a stun gun together deprive even large and specially trained dogs of morale. When using an electric shocker as a repeller, a dog attack most likely will not occur at all.

This video advertises ultrasonic dog repeller, while clearly audible electric shock sound. As a person who deals with both repellers and shockers, I can say that it is the shocker that is used in the video - the repeller does not make audible sounds at all and the effect on the dog is different.

If for some reason the attack could not be avoided, then there is no better means of protection. When an electric shock occurs, instant paralysis of the muscles occurs - the dog is immobilized, and there can be no talk of continuing the attack.

With the contact use of a stun gun against dogs, you need to remember only one thing: an electric discharge lasting more than two or three seconds in the head area can lead to the death of the animal. Therefore, it is better to use a shocker against dogs for a short time and strike only the body of an aggressive animal, but not the head.

Ultrasonic dog repeller.

stun gun not suitable for everyone and not always. You can’t give it to a child in school, the centralized supply of employees of municipal, medical, educational and other institutions with stun guns is also unlikely. In such cases, we recommend buy ultrasonic dog repeller.

Ultrasound is not audible to humans, but it has a depressing effect on dogs, and they try to get out of your way. Some dog repellers use ultrasound and flash lights. Massive exposure to ultrasound and flashes of light stuns the animal and produces a stopping effect.

How to avoid dog attacks?

The few tips offered by professional dog handlers can be life-saving when encountering an aggressive animal (or group of animals).

15 meters is a safety zone - a distance where you will probably not need any self-defense equipment and dog repellents, because outside this zone dogs do not consider you as a dangerous and hostile object.

If you have already managed to enter the 15-meter zone, experienced dog handlers advise: do not make sudden movements, do not stretch your arms and do not smile, so as not to provoke an attack. Start slowly walking around the dog in an arc without turning your back to it. You can't run away! Flight is a prey pattern and will only spur the predator instinct. In any case, you will not run away, since even a small dog runs faster than a person. Demonstrate confidence, look at the dog (if you meet a pack, look at the leader), but not in the eyes. Do not show your fear - that's the main condition.

A little from personal experience.

Previously, almost every dog considered it their duty to bark at me, several times I was bitten very badly and my clothes were torn - that is, the problem for me was quite acute. But, since I bought a dog repeller, the cases of its use can be counted on the fingers. Then the fear disappeared altogether and I stopped carrying a repeller with me.
The fact is that in addition to the effect of the use of any of the means, there is also a psychological effect - a sense of security in itself gives confidence and avoids many cases of aggression from dogs. Dogs are excellent psychologists and our fear can provoke an attack even by a harmless dog.
