Photos of the car Volga gas 22. Car "Volga" (22 GAZ) station wagon: review, description, specifications and reviews

Needless to say, I was immediately impressed by the Volga. How? It is impossible to single out one thing. Impressed by the whole image. Starting from a massive body and air suspension, and down to the little things from the interior and the spaciousness of the trunk. An image from the past reincarnated into a charismatic present. Even the rust on the body suits her - downright a real “rat look”!

Many people remember this car from Soviet films. Basically, the GAZ-22 was distributed to the needs of government agencies. These cars served faithfully in ambulances, taxis, fire departments, and were also escorts for parking planes at airports. In our time, it is almost impossible to see the 22nd Volga on the streets of large cities, since most of these cars were mercilessly sent to a landfill or scrapped, and some, perhaps, are in village gardens. But some connoisseurs who still managed to get the 22nd continue to drive this car! And not only at the annual exhibitions.

Vladimir became interested in the Volga for a long time, at the age of 17. As soon as he got his license, he bought his first Volga. She had a rare GAZ-23 body, and, after evaluating all the pros and cons, Vladimir eventually gave it to one collector for restoration. This was in 2008. It's been almost 8 years and the machine is still in operation!

As a token of gratitude, I received from him the usual twenty-first, as I wanted, in its original condition, without a collective farm and alterations. We call such cars "from under the grandfather." She had problems only with the body. This is the 21st I restored. I drive it now every day in Moscow, except for winter. But I wanted to move on, try my hand at custom building. In June 2014, I turned up a GAZ-22. This is a fairly rare station wagon. The condition of the car turned out to be very good for the original: despite the large amount of surface rust, there is almost no rot. I like the state of the body, and I want to leave it that way.

The seller of the car said that he once bought it from his grandfather, who served as a driver in the garage of the Lipetsk hospital. Probably, when the car was decommissioned from the garage, grandfather was able to take it for himself, instead of medical equipment, he installed a salon from a GAZ-21 and used it on the farm. The floor panel, roof light and pressure gauge in the dashboard indirectly indicate that it was once an ambulance.

The first long road of the Volga with the new owner behind the wheel began on the day of purchase - Vladimir drove the car from Lipetsk to Moscow. The pump, running down the stream, caused a lot of problems, so the entire trunk was littered with bottles of water. But this did not prevent us from overcoming 470 kilometers to the capital. Already upon arrival, Vladimir struggled with leaks for a long time. The problem was not only in the pump, I had to change the cylinder head. After that, he confidently drove it without any problems even in winter.

At the same time, the idea of installing an air suspension stubbornly sat in my head. Vladimir had such an idea a very long time ago, even when he was restoring the GAZ-21. But then it didn't come to that. And when Vova saw how the guys from the Boyars club were making the 24th Volga, he realized that the time had come! He really wanted to make the first GAZ-22 on pneuma, in the style of classic American custom cars of the 1950-60s. For this, air bags were ordered from the USA, and the air compressor, receiver from Kamaz, control valves and pneumatic lines were already purchased in Russia.

In March 2015, ordered cult American Cragar S / S wheels came from Japan, and in April Vladimir and Ivan aka Golden Joe installed air suspension on the front axle of the GAZ-22. A two-pointer pressure gauge was already embedded in the Volga torpedo - apparently, in the past it showed the pressure in oxygen cylinders. Fortunately, it turned out to be serviceable, and we managed to pick up adapters for it in order to connect it to the air suspension. Now it shows the pressure in the front circuit and in the receiver. In the future, a rear circuit will be connected instead of the receiver. Next to the pressure gauge is a mechanical valve that bypasses air from the receiver to the front circuit when pressed upwards. Accordingly, when pressed down, the air is bled from the front cushions into the atmosphere.

The guys were in a hurry to catch the event, running and testing lasted the whole of April, so the installation of pneuma on the rear axle was postponed for a long time. Moreover, the lowering of the stern of 21-22 bodies requires a serious overcooking of power elements. After that, it was decided to go by an updated car to Belarus for the stens-festival "Rake".

I only had doubts about the generator, so I asked my friends to take a spare for the road. By the way, it came in handy. There were no other problems with the car. Due to the fact that the diameter of the wheel has decreased, the car has become very slow. In the original, the car has huge wheels on diagonal rubber, a profile height of 7.1 inches. The new discs have the same diameter as the native ones, 15 inches, but due to modern low-profile 195/50 rubber, the wheel has become much smaller, so the maximum comfortable speed has decreased ... Although the speedometer showed 90 km / h, according to GPS it became 60 km / h . By the way, small wheels improve acceleration dynamics.

The gearbox remained the original three-speed, without overdrive. Realizing that driving 700 km to Minsk at a speed of 60 km / h would be a torment, before the trip, Vladimir changed the rear axle to a continuous one, the so-called "Tchaikovsky", from the Volga 31029. Its feature is in a faster gearbox with a ratio of 3.9 versus 4 .55 in the original bridge. This made it possible to compensate for the small wheels, and it became possible to drive the car on the track comfortably at a speed of 90 km / h, as before, on large wheels. In addition, an even faster pair of gears with a ratio of 3.58 from the later Volga with a Chrysler engine can be put into this bridge. With the new engine, this will allow you to develop more than 130 km / h on the track.

By the way, on the way to Belarus, I had to constantly add oil to the engine. In total, he “drank” about 10 liters of oil on the way! Since the engine needs a major overhaul, a lot of oil is wasted. In addition, it flows out of the gland packing. Oil consumption is very high - about 1 liter per 100 km, so Vladimir fills in the cheapest mineral oil. Gasoline, by the way, also pours the cheapest - in Moscow it is 92, in the regions it is still found 80. Consumption, by the way, is moderate - about 10 liters per 100 km on the highway.

As for maintenance, Vladimir does maintenance on the GAZ-21, like on all other cars, every 10 thousand kilometers. Much more often you have to spray the suspension. On the old Volga, a serviced front suspension is installed - ball and threaded joints of levers and rods, as well as pivots that have special oilers for lubricating these units. This procedure must be repeated every 2000 km.

Now the GAZ-22 costs more in the garage than it drives, and all for the same reason that the engine requires major repairs and devours oil. Since the oil leaks and burns all the time, fresh oil is constantly poured into the engine, and there is no point in changing it. At the same time, the mileage for the year did not even amount to 10,000 km, therefore it makes no sense even to change the oil filter.

Prices for spare parts for GAZ-22 are very different. In ads on the Internet - as lucky, sometimes there are adequate prices. But in the markets, from resellers - it is very expensive. Volgovod friends have many details. Guys change or sell them to each other at reasonable prices. Of course, there are rare details that take a very long time to look for. For example, for the second year now, Vova has been looking for a plastic insert in the diffuser on the back door - they are simply nowhere to be found!

And now about the salon. It is original here, spacious and comfortable, in terms of comfort it corresponds to the business class of the 1950s. The sofas here are not just huge, they are also very comfortable. And if you expand the front sofa, then it’s very comfortable to sleep - by the way, this is a feature of all GAZ-21 and GAZ-22. If in similar American cars of those years an ashtray, a radio, sun visors and a clock in the cabin were additional options, then here they were already standard! There is no stereo system or air conditioning. In the future, there is an idea to install the audio system hidden, so that it does not stand out from the design of the cabin. Vova has already done this on his main car, the GAZ-21, and he really likes it.

There is still a lot of work to be done on the car. Now Vladimir is trying to find time to assemble a new engine - on his own block 21A, but with some changes. It is necessary to sort out the gearshift mechanism and put the air suspension on the rear axle. There are thoughts to abandon the springs and switch to a 4-link suspension, because the loose springs do not keep the bridge from twisting around its axis at the time of launch, which can lead to breakage of the universal joint crosses. But such work will take a lot of time, you can’t just take and put levers instead of springs. Here it is required to calculate the angles of the levers, weld reliable brackets ... Why does Vladimir not give this work to the workshop? He himself worked in a car service, and knows this kitchen from the inside. Therefore, his motto is “if you want to do it well, do it yourself”!

History reference

If you delve into the history of the model, you can find out that the GAZ-22 was mass-produced from 1962 to 1970 at the plant of the same name in the city of Gorky. The body of the car is a five-door station wagon. Salon - transformable, 5-7-seater. When folding the rear seat, a flat floor was obtained, which, in combination with a high ceiling, provided a large capacity with a cargo volume of about 1500 liters and a carrying capacity, sometimes twice as high as stated in the passport.

The front of the GAZ-22 has a one-piece sofa. The instrumentation, compared to modern cars, is not too rich - there is a speedometer, an ammeter, a fuel level and water temperature sensor in the engine, as well as oil pressure.

The hood with a convenient spring-lever opening mechanism hides a 2.4-liter carburetor engine underneath. GAZ-22 had the same units as the GAZ-21 sedan of the third series: three engine options for 75, 80 and 85 horsepower, the same three-speed manual gearbox and rear axle.

The appearance of the GAZ-22 clearly reflects all the features inherent in the cars of that time: inflated fenders, round headlights, chrome body elements. Over the entire period of production, about 1500 cars were produced.

History of creation

This minibus was designed and built in the late 1970s by Alexei Nikitovich Arseniev, now deceased. He worked as a tinsmith in the garage of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and, as they say, he knew his business. When repairing and restoring beaten cars, skill can be shown, of course, but a creative approach is unlikely to find application here. Apparently, this is why this minibus appeared - as an outlet for the creative energy of its creator. In appearance, the car resembles a minibus (as it is written in the TCP), but in terms of the internal layout, it is more like a minivan.

As planned by the mastar, the minibus he built should become large and roomy, but stylistically should not differ from the Volga family 21. The basis was chosenRAF-977D because it was designed on the units and units of the GAZ-21 Volga and had a load-bearing body. It remained to combine the platform from the RAF and the body from the GAZ-22. Only an experienced bodybuilder with creative thinking and extensive experience could cope with this difficult task, which was Alexei Nikitovich.

Exterior

The platform (bearing base) of the RAF is practically unchanged. But the spare wheel has changed places with the gas tank and migrated from the middle part of the platform, on its left side, under the floor behind the rear axle: it is fixed there on a folding cradle. The gas tank is installed in place of the "reserve", and next to the other side - another one. Each has its own neck: one is displayed on the starboard side of the front door to the salon, the other is on the opposite side. The Volgovsky body from the GAZ-22 "Universal" has undergone a rather significant alteration, especially its front and rear parts.

The front end was shortened, and the back, on the contrary, was lengthened with an additional insert, also cut from another GAZ-22 body. At the same time, the middle part was moved forward to the position where the driver's door, like that of the RAF, would be above the front wheel of the car. The vacated space between the middle and rear was taken by an insert from another body. The joints between the insert and parts of the body are very carefully welded from the inside (A.N. Arsenyev was really a virtuoso in this) and carefully sealed from the outside. The joint between the front and middle parts fell on the front door pillar and is not visible from the outside.

The number of doors has decreased - one driver's door remains on the left, and the passenger one is welded and carefully sealed. The Volgovsky body was installed on the RAF platform, and the power elements (spars and crossbars) of both designs were pulled together in several places with stepladders and bolts. To cover these connections, skirts are welded to the sides of the body from below. But these elements are made as body kits and did not need to mask the seam.

Interior

In front of the car, as in the RAF, there were two seats between which there was an engine compartment with a GAZ-21A power unit with a power of 75 hp, covered with a soundproof cover. Salon from the frontseparated by a partition, but it is not high and does not create the impression of dividing the internal space and serves rather to strengthen the body, after all, the interior of the car is very long. two stationary seats are installed in the cabin - a single seat, behind the driver's seat, and a triple seat, in the middle of the cabin from side to side. The back of the latter separates a large luggage compartment from the passenger compartment. All side windows are lowered, except for the rear luggage ones, and the front windows are with turning windows.

The steering is mixed: the “steering wheel” and the column with the shaft are from the Volga, and the worm gear with bipod and rods are from the RAF. The braking system is also from the “rafik”, except for the parking brake (it is from the GAZ-21).The gearshift lever at the Volga, as you know, was on the steering column, but here it is on the floor, as in the RAF. Dashboard — Volgovskaya. Lighting devices (both internal and external) - Volgovsky. Additionally, red retroreflective cataforts are installed at the rear, and fog lights and side mirrors are also installed in front.

GAZ-22 "Volga" - a Soviet passenger car of the middle class with a station wagon. The development of a station wagon based on the new mass-produced Volga car produced since 1956 was carried out in parallel with the design of the sedan, but only a station wagon based on the third GAZ-21R series reached the assembly line, although experimental and pre-production prototypes were based on the second GAZ-21I series.

The GAZ-22 station wagon differed from the base sedan in completely original body panels after the middle pillar. Almost all produced cars were distributed among state organizations, mainly taxi companies, trade organizations and the ambulance service. Officially, the plant produced only station wagons, but various auto repair enterprises, taking the GAZ-22 as a basis, produced pickups and vans. The car was completed with the same engine as the main model of the third series - this is a 2.4-liter ZMZ-21A with a power of 75 hp.

The main advantage of the GAZ-22 was the increased volume of the luggage compartment, while the back of the rear seat and the pillow had hinges so that they could be folded - for this, the pillow leaned forward, and the back was laid in its place, forming a platform on the same level with the floor of the body. In addition, the back door was divided into two wings - upper and lower. In the open state, the latter additionally increased the cargo area for transporting long loads. Station wagons GAZ-22 were used in taxis as cargo-and-passenger - they carried passengers with oversized luggage. The ambulances were distinguished by single seats for the driver and the doctor, and behind the partition there was a stretcher and two folding seats, while the rear room was heated from a common heater.

The Volga GAZ-22 was equipped with a ZMZ-21A carburetor engine with a working volume of 2.4 liters (2445 cm3). With the modernization of the machines of the third series, he added a little power - it increased from 70 to 75 hp. (at 4000 rpm), the torque indicator has not changed - 170 Nm (at 2200 rpm). The maximum speed of the station wagon compared to the sedan was less - 115 km / h versus 130 km / h for the GAZ-21. The engine was aggregated with a three-speed manual gearbox. Claimed fuel consumption: 13 liters per 100 km on the highway and 16 liters in the urban cycle. For comparison, in the GAZ-21, the same figures were 11 and 15 liters, respectively. The station wagon fuel tank had the same volume of 60 liters.

GAZ-22 is a rear-wheel drive car with double wishbone front suspension and rear dependent suspension with leaf springs. The passport data of the wagon carrying capacity indicated five passengers in the front and rear seats (including the driver) and 175 kg of cargo, or two passengers in the front seat and 400 kg of cargo. Although in reality a reliable spring suspension made it possible to take on board more. As for the volume of the luggage compartment, as the most important indicator in this type of body, the GAZ-22 has about 1500 liters if the rear seat is folded down. Interior decoration is inexpensive and practical - leatherette on the side panels and linoleum on the floor. There was a lid in the floor of the trunk, under which there was a spare wheel and a tool. And the spare wheel for ambulances, just like earlier for ZIM, was hidden in a niche behind the left rear door. The car was equipped with 15-inch wheels with tires 6.70-15 "(170-380) with an outer diameter of 72 cm. The curb weight of the car was 1545 kg. The ground clearance was 190 mm. Body dimensions: 4810 x 1800 x 1610 mm (L x W x B).

The safety of the GAZ-22 was given no more attention than any other domestic car of that time. "Volga" station wagon had an automatic turn signal switch, windshield washer. Cars of the third series now did not have a deer on the hood at all - it was replaced by a safety decorative detail with a company emblem. There were no seat belts in the car - only some export modifications had places for their installation.

GAZ-22 is a rather rare car, due to the fact that only about 14 thousand of them were produced, and the specifics of operation required the most intensive use of the car. Therefore, few copies have survived to this day. Considering the presence of both restored copies in a more or less authentic form, and those that have undergone all kinds of tuning, as well as thoroughly worn out cars that require significant investments, the price range is very large.

From 62 years old. The issue ended in 1970. On the basis of this car, many modifications were then released, but first things first.

The history of the station wagon

Together with the development of the GAZ-21 sedan, a station wagon was created at the plant. But these machines could not enter the series. After some time, the first copy was built at the plant. The GAZ-21R of the second generation was considered the base for it. Serial cars were built on the basis of the third generation. Interestingly, model 22 GAZ was produced in very small quantities, and an ordinary resident of the USSR could not purchase a station wagon.

They were intended only for official use in various government agencies and enterprises. This was due to the fact that the model had excellent consumer qualities. This is a good load capacity and a large trunk volume. A Soviet person with this car could receive additional income - this was unprofitable for the government, because it was possible to get a huge hole in the budget.

So, after opening the back door, the station wagon could very easily turn from a private car into a production car: a small drilling machine or other equipment could be placed in the trunk.

This car became available to the majority only in the early 70s, when it was already discontinued, new cars replaced the station wagon from garages in public institutions. The only person to whom the car was sold was Yuri Nikulin. He justified exactly why he needed the station wagon: he intended to carry circus props in it.

Appearance

The design of the third series of the GAZ-21 car was taken as the basis. In comparison with the rest, here the specialists decided to completely change everything that has already been. The body was distinguished by a large number of chrome parts, a new radiator grille was installed in front, which was then popularly called the whalebone. The fangs of the GAZ-22 station wagon disappeared from the bumper. The deer was also removed from the hood. This was done on 21 more models and not just for the sake of a new look. Statistics have shown that in the event of a car getting into an accident involving pedestrians, severe injuries are caused by this particular emblem. As for the author who developed the design, this is Lev Eremeev.

When developing the body, he relied on the trends in automotive fashion of that era, and the Americans set the latest fashion trends at that time.

Naturally, by the standards of the West, the appearance looked too outdated. The Soviet man liked the design: the car looked quite fresh and seemed unusual to many. But this concerned only pre-production models. At the time the Volga was launched into the series, the design had already become commonplace and did not stand out on the roads.

There are very few of these cars left on the roads today. For lovers of retro themes, reduced copies of the GAZ-22 1:18 52 are offered.

load capacity

The springs in this model are quite rigid. This made it possible to carry 5 passengers and up to 200 kg of various cargoes. If there was only one driver and passenger in the cabin, more than 400 kg could be put in the trunk.

Technical part

In the design of the car, the engineers used everything that was equipped with the third series sedan of the same name. As for the power units, there were three of them. They had different power: 75, 80 and 85 horsepower. There was also a 65 hp diesel engine in history. with. The 75-horsepower equipment was intended for use in the USSR, the rest were going for export.

The engines were paired with three-speed gearboxes. These were fully mechanical synchronized boxes. Engineers thought about installing an automatic machine, but this idea remained unrealized for technical reasons. Chassis and interior details have been modified to meet the requirements of the new body, but the bridge remained unchanged.

1965 brought a slight modification to the entire Volga lineup.

So, spars were reinforced, wipers became a little longer, wheel bearings were replaced. The digital indices have also changed. The basic station wagon model became known as 22V, and the export model - GAZ M-22.

Specifications

The station wagon could accommodate from 5 to 7 people. The car accelerated to 120 km / h - this was its peak speed. As for the acceleration time to 100 km, it took 34 seconds. Fuel consumption ranged from 11 to 13.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The gearbox is a three-speed manual, equipped with synchronizers in second and third gear.

The front suspension was spring, independent type with wishbones. The rear is dependent, on springs. It had hydraulic shock absorbers. Reviews say that the car has a very soft suspension.

The steering mechanism was a globoidal one. As a brake system, they were used with a single-circuit hydraulic drive.

Story

The development of a station wagon based on the new mass-produced GAZ-21 Volga car produced since 1956 was carried out in parallel with the design of the sedan, but only a station wagon based on the third GAZ-21R series reached the series, although experimental and pre-production prototypes were based on the second GAZ-21R series. 21I/L. GAZ-22 was significantly different from the base sedan and had completely its own body panels after the middle rack.

Since 1965, along with the simple base model GAZ-22V (which did not differ in appearance from the original GAZ-22), part of the station wagons was produced as the GAZ-22G in improved design (the so-called "export chrome" or "luxury chrome" as on a sedan GAZ-21N), which were exported, but partially went to the domestic market. In addition to, as on the base sedan, a chrome grille and waist moldings, under the windshield and rear windows, “window sills”, along the top of the wings, for the GAZ-22G, wide chrome trims were added under the third row of windows, which are a continuation of the waist molding.

General information

When folding the rear seat of the GAZ-22, a flat area for cargo was formed in the back. In combination with a high ceiling, this provided a fairly large car capacity. The springs were stiffer than those of the sedan. The carrying capacity was 176 kg (when transporting 5 people) or 400 kg (when transporting two people).

It is curious that at the factory the sidewall of the body of the GAZ-22 station wagon was made from a standard one-piece stamped sidewall of the GAZ-21 body (sample after 1961), in which the rear-upper part was manually cut off, instead of which a separately stamped part was attached.

Unlike the sedan with 6.70-15" tires, for GAZ-22 station wagons, more load-bearing tires of 7.10-15" were used (it was also possible to use 7.00-15" tires from a ZIM car; and ordinary 6.70-15 tires were used on ambulances ").

Otherwise, the bodies and units of the GAZ-22 station wagons were similar to the GAZ-21R / US sedan.

Spreading

Almost all produced cars were distributed among state organizations, mainly taxi companies, trade organizations and the ambulance service. In a taxi, GAZ-22 station wagons were used as cargo-and-passenger ones - they transported passengers with oversized luggage. GAZ-22s were used by firefighters as staff vehicles. Also at airports for parking aircraft were used as GAZ-22 escort cars with special paint and a luminous display on the trunk lid with the inscription "Follow me / FOLLOW ME".

The medical (sanitary) modification of the station wagon was widespread in the ambulance service. The bodies of the outdated GAZ-22 (like the GAZ-22) were sometimes used as the basis for the creation of railway motorized tires, which were supplied with a makeshift chassis with railway wheels.

The GAZ-22 station wagon was not a consumer good, that is, the opportunity to purchase it for personal use in the usual manner was not provided. One of the few exceptions is the GAZ-22 artist Yuri Nikulin, sold to him in a special order for the transportation of voluminous circus equipment.

In connection with deliveries only to state organizations, where the write-off norms for the service life with recycling were in effect, the number of copies that have survived to this day is small, and their safety is usually very poor - due to their utilitarian purpose, these cars drive until they are completely worn out and have a lot of alterations .

Like the base sedan, GAZ-22 station wagons were exported, incl. to capitalist countries, and, contrary to popular belief, not at dumping prices. So, the British magazine "The Motor" in July 1964, when noticed in some old-fashioned and non-dynamic, such qualities of the station wagon as capacity, structural safety margin, cross-country ability, durability were highly appreciated. Article author Rab Cook addressed the machine primarily to the small farmer, admiring its versatility and practicality. The price of the car also deserved great attention, which amounted to 998 pounds with taxes for a car in a complete set. Serious complaints were caused only by the absence of any servo drives, the limited limits of longitudinal adjustment of the front sofa and the design that needs to be updated.

Sanitary modifications of the GAZ-22B had a mount for a stretcher in the back, minimal medical equipment. The cabin had a partition after the front seat. The saloon was heated and had good lighting. Outwardly, the ambulances were distinguished by identification marks (red crosses), frosted rear windows, a searchlight (spotlight) on the left front fender and an identification light with a red cross on the roof. Painted white. Currently, the number of surviving fully complete ambulances based on the GAZ-22B is unknown, most of them were converted into passenger-and-freight ones after decommissioning.

Windowless in the middle and back row, an experimental delivery van GAZ-22A was created at the plant in 1961. He did not go into the series, but according to his model, due to the considerable need of city organizations for delivery vehicles, car repair plants built vans. Such vans were produced by various ARZs both on the basis of the new GAZ-22 and on the basis of decommissioned vehicles.

Also, auto repair plants often converted station wagons (like sedans) that had exhausted their resource into pickup trucks. The Moscow ARZ made pickup trucks with a simple, angular loading platform, painted predominantly chocolate brown (according to some sources, to make rust less noticeable). The most advanced constructively and high-quality pickups were made in Latvia, where the cars were equipped with a loading platform with sides of a complex shape, repeating the section of the body of a regular Volga, which gave the car a more finished appearance.

The quality of manufacturing vans and pickups of most car repair plants and car repair shops was usually low, and the resource was correspondingly small. In addition, they were not sold for personal use. In connection with all this, vans and pickups have practically not survived to our time.

All-wheel drive station wagons are also known. In addition to five 4x4 station wagons produced by GAZ (one of which, according to some sources, was used by Brezhnev for hunting trips), they were conversions of serial vehicles of one quality or another, made using units from serial all-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, such as these cars (except the very first photo).
