In most cases, the sale of handmade knitwear is a side job for those who love needlework. And for Tatyana Ulyanova from Yekaterinburg, this is a completely successful business and a life's work. Products from her Krona Store brand are selling like hot cakes on Instagram, with many customers patiently waiting weeks for their orders to be filled. And Tatyana, as an additional source of income, has established the production of yarn - her husband is engaged in this area..

29 years old, entrepreneur from Yekaterinburg, founder of the project (production of knitted accessories for home interiors). After graduation, she worked as a wedding photographer, then decided to open her own business. The Krona Store project was launched in 2016. Married, has a son.

Find your niche

Before starting to earn money by knitting, Tatyana Ulyanova worked as a photographer. She photographed weddings and other celebrations, conducted individual photo shoots. When I decided to change the field of activity, this skill turned out to be very useful. Now she takes all the photos to promote her brand and sell products herself.

“The idea of knitting accessories for the home did not come about by chance,” says Tatyana. - I have long been steadily drawn towards interiors, design, decor. Probably affected by a large number of experienced moves and repairs. But I chose a niche for a long time. I wanted to find not just a hobby, but my life's work. Therefore, I approached the search with all responsibility. I wrote a list of possible options, tried it, got frustrated, and looked further.”

The first thing Tatyana tried to make was hand-woven tapestries. When the first two were ready, it turned out that this activity, although interesting, was insanely difficult. “Already after my first tapestry, I realized that my back was simply not intended for this, although, paradoxically, everything is fine with knitting large carpets in this regard. Another reason why we didn’t get along with the tapestries was that the products lacked practicality.”

Tatyana also tried to make leather notebooks. I mastered the basics, found tools and a piece of material in the bins at home, tried to sew, it worked out. But when I went to the suppliers to choose leather, I realized that this was not her material. She also brushed aside wood and linocuts.

In her searches, she quite often turned to Western projects. They impressed her with their “atmosphere”: “Once, wandering through Instagram, I came across several foreign masters from the USA and Canada. These were knitters, but not of carpets, but of blankets, hats and snoods. Their works were striking not only for their beauty, but also for their impeccable sense of taste. Their accounts were perfectly designed in the same style. For Russia, it was then a curiosity. I thought: choose what you like and act.

So Tatyana gradually came to knitting: at first she made blankets and baskets, and a little later the “carpet” era began.

“It took exactly six months from a firm decision to try something new to the very first knitted basket,” says Tatyana. The project began to develop with the proceeds from the sale of products. “It took me quite a bit of money to start the business for yarn,” she recalls. - But I think that it was not without luck. The first baskets I knitted were immediately bought. I invested my first profit in yarn again. And then I got a few more orders.

In 2016 she started page on Instagram. In April, she laid out the first round carpet for the children's room. A cotton carpet with a diameter of 2 meters was sold for 18 thousand rubles. Thus began the history of the Krona Store brand. The name "Krona" was not born by chance, says Tatyana. She usually draws inspiration from nature, and her carpets, like the crown of a tree, are openwork and voluminous.

Carpets fly around the world

Now the main product of Krona Store is handmade cotton knitted carpets. Tatyana and her craftsmen can knit them to order in different colors, patterns and sizes. The largest carpet that was created in the workshop was 340 by 380 cm.

“These rugs are not for everyone, but for those who love natural materials and want a unique piece knitted specifically for their home space. I also want to note the energy of my products. She is incredible! It's always nice to get something made with soul,” says Tatyana.

In addition to carpets, Krona Store knits pouffes, baskets, pillows and blankets - everything for the interior. “I don’t undertake anything else, since I am for a narrow specialization. But it's not boring at all. There are still so many ideas and interesting things to be brought to life,” explains Tatyana.

To be constantly interesting for customers, Krona Store does not stand still. Products with new patterns constantly appear in the assortment. When developing them, the master relies on trends in the decor industry as a whole. Sometimes customers ask to knit a carpet according to their sketch.

At the same time, all the carpets of this brand have a single recognizable style: “I am one of the first who started knitting carpets with geometric patterns, and large volumes. I love minimalism and all products reflect my tastes. They are concise, stylish, with a twist.

Orders for the master from Yekaterinburg come from all over Russia. During the work, the carpets were also sent to the UK, USA, Greece, France.

How the problem prompted a new business idea

Things didn't always go smoothly. One of the first difficulties that Tatyana faced was the lack of yarn necessary for knitting: “I was looking for a supplier in my city, but at that time knitting yarn was not popular, so I had to order it from another city. The transport company missed the deadlines, because of this I greatly delayed one large order. But then I realized that there should always be a plan "B".

This is how Krona Yarn- another project of Ulyanova. Under this brand, she began to produce handmade knitted yarn. “At first I did not intend to make yarn, although everyone around me advised me to do so. Out of curiosity, I decided to just give it a try. I bought a small piece of fabric. The only tools I needed were scissors, a piece of chipboard as a ruler, and a pizza cutter. Three hours later, my first hank was ready. A basket of these threads still lives at home,” Tatyana recalls.

It turned out that this yarn is needed not only by her, but also by many other knitters. And its production can become an additional source of income. “Initially, I was engaged in yarn alone. Everything was done by hand, it's hard work, I tell you. Then the first equipment appeared, and I suggested that my husband take up yarn. The creative process has always been my favorite. So now the husband is the main yarn. And I buy yarn from him for my products on very favorable terms,” says Tatyana.

At that moment, there was little competition in the market, but gradually everything changed. Now the market, according to Tatyana, is oversaturated. Despite fierce competition, Krona Yarn is bought in many Russian cities. Yarn is sold through Instagram with delivery by mail or transport companies. It can also be bought through partners in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Vladimir, Izhevsk, Rostov-on-Don and even in Minsk.

Knitted yarn is created from the so-called cooler, says Tatyana. “The fabric goes through three steps to become the final product - cut into strips, drawn and wound into a skein. The yarn is quite thick - 7-9 mm. From it you can knit excellent interior products, as well as handbags, slippers, toys and much more.

A skein of such yarn is 90-110 meters long. When buying up to four pieces, one skein costs 320 rubles, from 10 pieces - already 280 rubles. For example, a Krona Store 35 by 45 cm ottoman takes about 4.5 skeins. For a carpet with a diameter of 1.5 meters, 13-14 skeins will be needed. And for a rectangular carpet 230 by 300 cm, more than 50 skeins are required.

Orders are booked six months in advance

Krona Store products are very popular - despite the high price. But manual labor is not cheap. The prices for products from Tatyana Ulyanova are as follows: a knitted pillow measuring 40 by 40 cm with sintepuh filler costs 3.5 thousand rubles, a round carpet with a diameter of 1.5 meters can be ordered for 11.5 thousand rubles, and a carpet with a diameter of 195 cm - for 18 thousand rubles.

All products of the brand are knitted by hand, and this is not a quick process. In a month, the master can sometimes get only four carpets, but of a large volume. “Plus, my clients like to order in sets. Often, in addition to the carpet, a basket, pouffe or pillow is knitted in the same style,” says Tatyana.

With such demand, very soon she ceased to have time to fulfill orders herself and found assistants. “Now Krona Store is me and several of my craftswomen who can knit everything and a little more. I was lucky to find them on the ad, these are my sorceresses. All girls undergo training, after which most of them continue to work with me,” says Tatiana.

And still, back in October last year, she was forced to suspend taking orders for carpets and baskets. Even then, all orders were scheduled until March 2019. Poufs and blankets to order can be expected faster. Their turnaround time is several weeks. Also in the workshop they always try to have some products in stock, but their choice is limited.

The secret of success is carpets and a little life

The master promotes his product mainly through Instagram. For nearly three years of existence, the brand page has gained 97 thousand subscribers. Tatyana is engaged in promoting and maintaining the account herself. On Instagram, she not only sells knitwear, but also communicates with subscribers, shares inspiration, and shows part of her life.

“Of course, I had to learn how to properly maintain and promote my page. But it’s more important to love your job and talk about it with burning eyes, ”she explains the popularity among subscribers.

“I don’t have my own website, and I don’t plan to launch it yet,” says Tatyana. She explains this by the fact that each product is created individually to order - of any size, color, pattern, so there is not much point in the catalog. Plus, while the demand for carpets sometimes even exceeds the capabilities of the workshop.

Another additional source of income and increased interest in the page was the master classes that Tatyana periodically records and releases. For 800 rubles, everyone gets a theory, a diagram and a video on how to knit this or that product. More workshops are planned for 2019.

“There are quite a lot of plans for the near future. But basically everything concerns carpets. I would like to knit as many as possible - unique and soft, to “shoulder” as many houses as possible,” says Tatyana.

The master is sure that love for her work and readiness to not stop thinking about it 24 hours a day will help her realize all her plans: “It’s difficult, but it’s also a pleasant tiredness from creating something a little miraculous…”

If you have a carpet that you want to sell, then you need to know how to do it correctly, especially if it is a handmade carpet, so in this article we will figure out how and where to sell a handmade carpet and more.

Where to sell used handmade and machine-made carpets?

First of all, you need to decide for yourself the question, where is it better to sell a used carpet? One of the right decisions is to advertise on various thematic forums in your city or region (forums about interior design, repair, antique forums for handmade carpets), and also to help you online bulletin boards, which are now very numerous, and they have high attendance. You can also advertise the sale of the carpet in the local newspaper in the appropriate section.

Sell used machine-made carpet it will be much easier, because there is more demand for them, but it is better not to rush to sell a handmade carpet and approach this issue with due attention, especially if it is an old or antique handmade carpet of high quality and with a certain history.

To sell old handmade carpet carefully study the market of antique shops and sites in your region, or directly contact an antique dealer or firms that sell this kind of goods, for a certain commission they will find a buyer for you.

How to place an advertisement for the sale of a carpet in order to sell the carpet faster and more profitably

Regardless of what kind of carpet you have - or work, large or small, in good or bad condition, the main thing is to correctly place an advertisement for the sale and beautifully present information about this rug to the buyer. Therefore, further we will figure out step by step how to sell a carpet.

1) First of all, we make a brief and informative title of the ad, which should attract attention: “I will sell a rare antique handmade carpet”, “I will sell a high-quality used carpet in excellent condition”, “I will sell an inexpensive beautiful high quality carpet” and so on.

2) For selling on the Internet, good photos of the carpet being sold are very important. Many buyers immediately want to see what they are offered to buy, whether they like this carpet, what condition it is in, and whether there are any defects. Based on this, it is recommended to take high-quality photos in high quality and in good lighting. It is necessary to take photos from different sides of the carpet (especially in a handmade carpet, from the light and dark sides), in handmade carpets, take a photo from the reverse side, attaching a ruler so that you can count the number of knots and find out the density of the carpet. Photos of the pile of the carpet (preferably at a break) and a separate photo of each defect on the carpet, if any, will be useful.

3) Specify the exact size of the carpet you are selling, the pile height.

4) The material (or several) from which the carpet is made (I will sell a woolen carpet, I will sell a silk carpet, etc.). In the description, you can add a description of the advantages of this composition in a few words.

5) Describe the shape of the carpet (rectangle, circle, oval), pattern on the carpet, prevailing colors.

6) The country of manufacture of the carpet and the type of its production (handmade or machine-made).

7) The price of the carpet. To determine the cost of a carpet, study similar ads, find out the price of the same carpets in stores and, taking into account the condition of the carpet, set your price (you can obviously set more, because most people like to bargain and subsequently making a discount, you will still earn on this sale, and the client will be satisfied with the discount received). With handmade carpets, the situation is more complicated, if you cannot estimate the real value of your carpet, then use the services of specialists. In an advertisement for the sale of a handmade carpet, its cost can be omitted, writing that you can find out more during communication.

8) If a handmade carpet is for sale, then it would not be superfluous to write an additional story about this carpet: where and how was it bought, how old is it, how was it used, are there any features, why is it valuable, and so on.

In conclusion to this article, I would like to hope that all these recommendations will help you, how and where to sell used carpet so that everyone is satisfied, both you and the future owner of the carpet. We share the article on social networks and leave our advice in the comments on this topic, thereby helping others in this matter.

Interior design has become a passion for many people who are spending more and more money to furnish their homes and apartments. That is why original decorative elements such as carpets, which can give a certain character to any room, are in demand today. For those who want to become professional carpet weavers, this can be a good source of income.

How to get started?

When planning any business, it is necessary to prepare a good business plan. It will guide you in the next steps, and especially if you are going to apply for a loan, a business plan will be required as one of the required documents to submit to the bank.

For work you will need:

  • Business plan.
  • License to work.
  • Equipment.
  • Necessary accessories.
  • Additional staff (optional).

The positive side of carpet weaving:

  • For the manufacture of carpets, you do not need much experience or special education.
  • Overhead costs are very low.
  • Original handmade carpets allow you to earn a satisfactory income.
  • The type of business is characterized by high flexibility.

Negative side:

Carpet making is a physical job, rather tedious as it requires a lot of concentration.

What do you need to get started? First of all, you need to purchase a hand loom. Of course, such a business is not done from scratch and there will be some costs, but quite small. There is a large selection of machines on the market, starting at 2000 rubles. Although children's machines are so cheap, they make quite adult things that are in great demand. This is:

  • rugs,
  • bedding,
  • belts,
  • wool products, etc.

Initial work on these machines will give you hands-on experience.

It is worth looking at the offers posted on advertising portals. Here you can buy a professional carpet making machine, even at half its original cost. Of course, it will be necessary to first check its technical condition and purchase weaving accessories, among which

  • hooks,
  • spindle
  • scissors,
  • nodes,
  • dyes, preferably natural, which enhance the intensity of the color.

Also most important is the availability of material for production from any natural fiber such as:

  • wool,
  • silk.

In addition, you should find a suitable room for the production and storage of woven carpets. They take up a lot of space, and therefore the workshop will require significant space. A small area is needed for drawing structures and designing carpets. In addition, you should remember to clean and maintain them regularly in the warehouse.

What are the benefits of handmade carpets?

A huge plus for buyers is the opportunity to buy something original, providing a sense of uniqueness and luxury. Carpet products are woven to order at the request of the customer, depending on his individual preferences. He can independently decide on the shape, size, color or patterns of the product. With the help of this business idea, customers are given the opportunity to purchase a unique product created according to an original concept.

An important feature of handmade carpets is their strength and other quality characteristics. In addition, they are very pleasant to the touch, provide a feeling of warmth and even maintain a constant level of humidity in the room. They are great for all living spaces, children's rooms or bedrooms.

It is also worth noting an important environmental aspect, to which people in our time pay great attention and are willing to pay. Unlike synthetic materials, which are mainly used in the production of machine-made carpets, handmade ones are made only from natural fibers.

Where are the best places to sell handmade carpets?

Handmade carpets are a product aimed at wealthier customers who mainly shop in specialty stores. You can contact the owners or representatives of small retail units that sell furniture, household appliances.

Such cooperation will provide an opportunity to cover a large group of customers. However, it should be noted that the store will need to give part of the profits as a commission.

It's a good idea to use the internet as a trading platform to advertise on the biggest auction sites. In the future, you can simply create a separate site. This will require the preparation of detailed descriptions of the carpets and their photographs. The site should also include information about the possibility of making various drawings at the request of the customer.

Before starting work, it is necessary to develop your own technology, select materials. All this will allow you to find your image and product design.

The production of carpets involves the presence of a workshop. Of course, you can start work in an apartment, but later, in order for the business to become larger, it will be necessary to equip a workshop that will allow you to reach another level.

Before starting work, collect all possible information on this topic and choose the path that is best for you.

Depending on the cost and effort, set your price in each individual case. Gather information about a similar product in the local market.

Investments: from 1 350 000 rubles

Payback: from 18 months

In this article, we will analyze a business idea for selling carpets: what you need to open a store and step-by-step instructions for starting, how much money you need and how much you can earn.

business concept

The store will sell carpets and rugs made of different materials, aimed at average customers. It is important that the products correspond to fashionable trends in the interior, to support current trends.

The main clients are people who carry out renovations, choose accessories for decorating their apartments, as well as owners of firms and enterprises who purchase carpets for decorating office premises.

What is required for implementation?

To open a carpet shop, you need to find a room, purchase furniture and equipment. It will be necessary to build special holders for carpets, where exhibition samples will be hung, to organize podiums for horizontal placement of products. For the store you need to purchase:

  • cash register;
  • a computer;
  • Printer.

In order for buyers to better see the offered goods, it is necessary to additionally illuminate the products with the help of spotlights. A store of 200 m² will need a minimum of 10 spotlights.

From the furniture you will need to buy a table, two chairs, a rack. And, of course, goods. To do this, even at the stage of business planning, you need to decide on the range of carpets that will be put up for sale. Focus on the potential buyer. In a small village where people with average incomes live, it is not advisable to sell handmade carpets. But middle-class rugs will certainly be in demand.

In recent years, buyers prefer to purchase carpets in the form of an oval and a semicircle, but the classic rectangular version does not go out of fashion.

As for the naturalness of raw materials, wool carpets with silk weaves have been at the peak of popularity for five years now.

Step by step start instructions

  1. Registration. Registration of activities as an individual entrepreneur is the best option for such a business. It will be possible to work under the simplified tax system, deducting 6% of revenue from taxes for taxes. Since carpets are classified as highly flammable products, you will need to obtain a conclusion from the Rospozhnadzor authorities on the compliance of the premises with safety requirements, as well as equip a fire alarm system in the store. The total cost of processing all documents and permits will be approximately 3,000 rubles.
  2. room. The premises for the future store must be sought in the city center so that a large number of people pass by it every day. Place a bright sign that attracts attention. A good option is to rent a room in a large shopping center, especially if there are building and finishing materials stores there. As for the area, be guided by the amount of goods and do not forget that you need to equip a small room for storage at the store. In general, 60 m² can be enough for a very modest shop. Rent in the city center will be approximately 500-1000 rubles. per 1 m², so every month you will have to spend about 60,000 rubles in this direction. You will also need to make repairs in the store, build podiums, holders for vertically arranged carpets. Choose your brand, design the store in accordance with it, come up with an original name. The cost of repairs and registration will amount to 120,000 rubles.
  3. Equipment, goods. Most of the funds you will go to this point (about 1,000,000 rubles).
  4. Staff. The store should hire at least two salespeople, preferably men. Then it will turn out to save on the services of workers. Sellers will exhibit, pack the goods. In addition to consultants, you can hire an additional two loaders who will be engaged in the placement of carpets in the store and their delivery to the buyer. Bookkeeping can be done by a visiting specialist. It will not be superfluous to involve a sales manager who will deal with advertising and finding customers. The cost of staff salaries will be about 120,000 rubles.
  5. Advertising, customer search. In a small village, you can distribute leaflets, business cards through mailboxes or among people. Try to visit exhibition fairs, weekend markets where you can present your products. Enter a discount system, you can order inexpensive bonus cards, not necessarily cumulative, but with a fixed discount percentage. Advertising on television and radio will be expensive at a cost, but the result from it will not be long in coming. If you have extra funds, spend them on creating your own website. Then it will be possible to sell carpets via the Internet. Advertising costs will be approximately 20,000 rubles. If you plan to maintain a website, add another 30,000 rubles here.

Financial calculations

Start-up capital

Monthly expenses

How much can you earn?

The store markup on goods can vary from 30 to 60%. As for the volume of revenue, it will be possible to predict it after the first month of work, since it directly depends on the number of products sold.

Payback periods

The payback period for the initial investment for such a business will be 18-24 months.

Business risks and cons

It is better to open a carpet store in early autumn. It is at this time of the year that the product is in greatest demand. In winter, there will also be an increase in sales. By spring and all summer, you should not expect an influx of buyers, so you can make discounts on goods from 30 to 50%.

Conclusion

Despite the impressive start-up capital, the business associated with the sale of carpets can be a good investment, a source of constant stable income in the future. The main thing is to be patient and not give up the work you have started halfway through.
