Products by configuration and by. Automation of goods picking in a warehouse

Bundling involves the collection and processing of various products, as well as their packaging for subsequent delivery to the consumer.

Assembling goods in the warehouse carried out according to the buyer's orders. There are five stages in the bundling process:

  1. 1. Receiving an order.
  2. 2. Collection of goods by name (article).
  3. 3. Packaging of goods selected from the warehouse.
  4. 4. Preparing the order for shipment.
  5. 5. Preparation of documents for the prepared order.

After the order is formed, an invoice for product release is drawn up. The document must be drawn up in such a way that it is convenient to collect products in the warehouse. That is, the list of products in the invoice corresponded to the order of their location in the warehouse. For this purpose, a route map is drawn up, which outlines the entire order picking process. Proper organization of routes for warehouse workers affects the speed of picking and also eliminates unnecessary movements of personnel. Order picking in the warehouse will be completed faster if this route starts from the farthest end and ends at the exit from the goods placement area.

Depending on the volume of the order, the speed of collection of goods and the requirements for accuracy, the assembly process can be carried out separately or in combination. Individual packaging of products in warehouse involves order assembly sequentially by one picker. When performing this option, the selection accuracy increases without violating the integrity of the order. But it takes a lot of time to carry out such a configuration; in addition, the possibility of crossing flows increases, that is, the likelihood of other workers waiting for the required area to be vacated.

Complex packaging involves the collection of products for several orders at once. This method is considered the most effective because warehouse for picking and storage is divided into several sectors, each of which has its own warehouse employee. After assembling part of the order, pickers transfer it to the receiving sector, where the correctness of the selected orders is checked, as well as their sorting. The use of a comprehensive package significantly reduces the time for its implementation. In addition, order pickers learn the product range in the shortest possible time, and product picking in the warehouse is carried out much faster.

Selected goods must be carefully assembled after sorting. The packaging is selected to ensure complete safety of the cargo during transportation. Next, all packages are placed on one or more pallets, on top of which a list is attached. The assembly of orders is completed with the arrival of a freight forwarder to the warehouse for picking and storage, who checks the availability of goods according to the invoice, and then delivers the order to the client.

Outsourcing the order picking process

Having entered into a procurement agreement with an outsourcing company, the organization receives an additional division represented by the outsourcer, but legally absolutely independent. In this regard, the customer organization receives some advantages:

  • - picking orders in warehouse carried out faster by attracting workers involved only in this process;
  • - the costs of an outsourcer are significantly less than work performed in-house;
  • - the opportunity to reduce the staff of our own staff;
  • - product packaging in the warehouse is carried out with constant, consistent high quality;
  • - monitoring the work performance of warehouse employees is the direct responsibility of the contractor.

The outsourcing service offered by our company involves the use of our workforce on your terms. Orders in the warehouse will be completed with maximum accuracy and on time. In addition, our company guarantees complete confidentiality, as well as compliance with trade secrets.

The process consists of several stages:

  1. Reception and processing of orders with subsequent transfer of information to the picking area;
  2. The process of packaging and shipping goods to the customer.

The first stage is usually the responsibility of the commercial department. Orders are accepted either by telephone, fax or email. If the order arrives in electronic form, then, as a rule, order forms are sent (common formats are *.xls or database format *.dbf).

The order must contain:

  • quantity of goods
  • its name
  • note and other data if necessary.

The article is indicated by agreement, although it does not apply to the mandatory attributes of the order. In cases where the supplier of the goods undertakes a 100% return of expired products, there is the concept of auto-order. This process is carried out either by a sales representative or by a company order manager, based on the balances and sales of each type of product from its buyer.

During the process, an employee of the commercial department usually sees the remains of a particular product. If the required item is not available, he must inform the customer about this and offer him to increase the volume of goods by a similar item.

Often, under certain conditions, employees have to work in emergency mode. This usually happens in the following situations:

  • with a large number of urgent orders;
  • in case one customer places several additional orders for one shipment date;
  • in case of uneven receipt of orders (especially late in the day).

Quite often at distribution centers for retail stores, you can see a picture when orders from customers arrive late in the evening, and products need to be shipped early in the morning. This is especially true when products have short lead times, and store owners, in order to prevent delays, wait for the end of the influx of customers to place orders for relatively correct balances. A warehouse can solve this problem by organizing night shifts for sales department workers and order picking department workers.

Some stores, depending on demand, may send several orders per day, or make unplanned urgent orders. These factors significantly increase the workload of the commercial department employees. To eliminate such loads, it is necessary, when concluding a contract, to clearly state in the supply agreement an individual schedule for the delivery of products. As a rule, the order is 1-2 days before the delivery day. The schedule usually indicates in what period of time it should be ready for shipment. If the client does not want to order goods according to a specific schedule, then the number of additional and urgent orders can be reduced by not providing additional discounts on the goods, as well as by introducing a markup on urgent orders. The use of such fiscal measures must be clearly thought out and justified. The customer should be warned about them separately.

Process automation

The problem of several orders for one delivery date can be solved by automating the process: during the working day, order forms from customers can be loaded into the accounting program from e-mail; if there are several orders from one supplier, then in the program they are combined into one common one and processed respectively.

Identification of the same order occurs according to the following parameters:

  1. client name,
  2. sending email address,
  3. date of shipment of goods,
  4. contract number, etc.

Next, employees of the commercial department transmit the information to the product picking and packaging department. This process is very important and responsible, since the human factor is most involved here, and, therefore, errors are more possible. An addressable storage system in a warehouse will greatly help to reduce them to a minimum. The presence of subsequent control over the correctness of order picking by storekeepers-controllers also has a positive effect on the quality of work.

An important quality indicator is the speed of picking goods. Proper organization of routes for warehouse workers greatly increases this speed. Its principle is to eliminate unnecessary movements of working personnel and auxiliary loading equipment. Such routes are initially planned during the development of warehouse facilities; they should follow the shortest route around the places where goods are selected. It is not advisable to perform work twice in the same passage. It is best if the route starts at the furthest point from the exit to the storage room and ends closer to the exit. This is done in order to reduce the effort required to move goods intended for subsequent packaging.

Another effective method

One of the most effective methods of reducing labor costs for product packaging is to supply goods in standard factory packaging (box, pack, pallet, etc.). The commercial department should discuss this issue with customers at the very beginning. In this situation, the pitfall may be an error in determining the number of product units per total package. For example, this is quite common when packing canned food in iron cans. One box contains 36 cans, the other contains 32 cans. To avoid such mistakes, warehouse workers are required to know the assortment of the warehouse or this should be taken into account when installing a software package for monitoring and managing warehouse cargo flows.

The method of combining orders into a single batch is quite popular today. This method is most relevant in cases of goods being distributed by car in one direction. The main advantage of this method is a single route for the order picker, which significantly saves time on movement approximately proportional to the number of orders in the batch. But when sorting goods by customer, additional time is still spent. Some warehouses successfully use the practice of entrusting the sorting process directly to the forwarder when unloading the goods to the buyer.

Automation of goods picking in a warehouse is intended for faster fulfillment of orders, picking, increasing the level of service, and increasing the customer base.

The direct purpose of warehouses is to store goods. Product picking is a process where upon receipt of an invoice, batches are formed for shipment. A batch may contain a different number of assortment items. Algorithm for the picking process: selection of the required number of goods from storage areas, packaging, transfer for transportation.

What is the essence of order picking in a warehouse?

Order picking in a warehouse is a rather labor-intensive stage of the logistics process. Wholesale trading is characterized by more frequent shipments of consignments than receiving processes and movements.

Stages of order completion:

  • Receiving an invoice
  • Assembly by name or article
  • Equipment
  • Preparation for transportation
  • Preparation of documents for sending

The picking process is regulated by route maps to understand the order of care and routes of movement throughout the warehouse.

Most of the warehouse personnel are engaged in the picking of goods, 50% of the time is spent on intra-warehouse movements and searching for storage locations, 20% of the time is spent on generating shipping documents, and only 10% of the time is directly selected.

Methods for picking goods in a warehouse

Let's consider some methods for assembling goods in a warehouse, when choosing which it is important to take into account the size of the warehouse, the number of goods for storage, the average number of goods in the invoice, the number of warehouse employees, and warehouse equipment.

  1. Small warehouses often use a discrete picking method: the picker creates the next order only after finishing work with the previous invoice.
  2. For medium-sized warehouses, the batch picking method is effective - batches are selected simultaneously for all orders, distributed according to invoices and moved to the picking area.
  3. The picking method “by zones” means that the picker is responsible only for the warehouse zone entrusted to him; shipment is carried out according to invoices.
  4. The “waves” technique combines zones and batches - orders are completed in batches, goods are selected from different zones in turn.

In order to choose a method that is suitable for your treasure, it is necessary to organize a competent system for storing goods, taking into account the location of the popular assortment.

Automation of collection and packaging of goods in a warehouse

Automation of collection and packaging of goods in a warehouse can significantly reduce the processing time of invoices, reduce warehouse costs, minimize errors, and can significantly improve the accounting of product balances.

The picking process is launched according to shipping schedules for just-in-time shipment.

Order assembly can be either individual or collective. To simultaneously complete a large pool of orders, the wave method is used.

Analysis of threshold inventory values in piece selection cells; a task for moving pallets is automatically generated.

The process of replenishing selection cells starts according to analytics at the end of the work shift.

As part of the selection process, the forklift driver is tasked with lowering the pallet. When the next wave is selected, the WMS system will take into account the remains on the floor. The replenishment of the selection cells is initiated by the manager at the end of the shift.
