General preparatory information

Let me start with the fact that I couldn’t find a single article on the Internet that comprehensively covered the mirrorless camera market in 2015 (maybe I didn’t search well J). Of all the variety of materials, in my opinion, the most sensible review of mirrorless cameras was made by Mike Toptygin on Youtube. His recommendations formed the basis for the list of system cameras to be evaluated in this article. I would like to immediately warn the reader about the somewhat one-sided information presented - first of all, the author pursued personal goals and attention was paid specifically to models potentially suitable for his requirements. Models that fall out of the author’s field of vision are by no means worse, and perhaps even better, than the author’s choice - they simply do not fit the criteria for a specific purchase. Also, the article will not provide detailed specifications models and descriptions - all this information is available in sufficient quantities in detail in the form of reviews on the Internet. The article is rather an initial guide to brands and their features, designed to help the reader save time at the first stage of selection - choosing a manufacturer.

This is what the initial list of models under consideration looked like. *At the end of the article you will find the final list.

In English, the name of this type of camera is most often used as MDC - Mirrorless Digital Cameras. Also, other abbreviations are often used

best mirrorless camera 2015

And here, so to speak, is the “people's world rating” - the top cameras used by users of the popular flickr.com photo bank. Since I am choosing a camera on a limited budget, the rating of previous years 2013, 2014, which, as a rule, lose a lot in value, will be interesting.

The fierce competition is forcing manufacturers to equip their cameras with ever higher technological innovations. Who is doing well? Global trends in 2014 show that Sony and Fuji are expanding their market share, while Panasonic and Olympus are declining. Unfortunately, I could not find data for 2015. (Perhaps some of the readers have such information - I would be grateful for your comment).

The popularity of system mirrorless cameras is growing every day (2015 showed this). For example, in many South Asian (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) countries, the percentage of mirrorless cameras reaches or exceeds 50% of the market for all cameras! In quantitative terms, mirrorless cameras have already overtaken DSLR cameras in Asia.

So I need system camera(in simple words - mirrorless) with a relatively large matrix (more than 1”) - for high-quality printing of posters in A1-A2 format, with a rotating screen - for creative purposes (for example, photographing “from the floor” or discreetly photographing people from the waist or through a telephoto), with acceptable video quality at in insufficient lighting (Full HD 1920×1080, 30 fps), with a mount designed for a large fleet of optics and allowing the use of manual optics from third-party manufacturers, up to the optics of film cameras. Cost – up to 400 USD , used option is possible.

  • For reference: Briefly about the sizes of matrices used in mirrorless cameras

Fujifilm, Sony, Canon and Samsung have sensor with crop 1,5 ; at Panasonic and Olympus– Micro Four Thirds system – crop 2.0; Nikon2.7x; Pentax4.7x.

At the beginning of autumn 2015, mirrorless cameras were produced by the following companies (brief reasons for the first selection are given in parentheses)

  • Canon– ignoring, until 2015, the direction of system mirrorless cameras. An extremely weak M1 model, which for a long time represented the entire line of Canon mirrorless cameras, and a very good M3 model - just appeared, but unacceptable in price (-)
  • Fuji– a leader in the class of top-end mirrorless cameras. When many “wrote off” Fuji as scrap, Fujifilm “resurrected from the ashes” by entering the market with excellent system cameras, unconditionally securing its leading position in this segment. (+)
  • Leica– holds on in the market thanks to the legendary quality of optics and the excellent quality of its cameras. Insanely expensive, with outstanding shooting parameters, but with poor functionality in modern conditions. (-)
  • Nikon– were one of the first to stake a claim on the mirrorless camera market. The Nikon 1 series are excellent cameras, but not designed to compete with SLR cameras, primarily due to the small size of the base matrix - 1" (13.2 × 8.8 mm). Unfortunately, it is not suitable as a second camera for the main SLR. A feature of the entire series is the fastest and most accurate autofocus in its class. (-)
  • Olympus– the company is seriously developing the direction of system mirrorless cameras, right up to models for professionals. The result is magnificent models capable of competing equally in the top. (+)
  • Panasonic– a leader in the field of cameras capable of shooting professional video, including system cameras. The shortcomings of mirrorless cameras of previous years, in terms of photo quality, have been corrected in modern models. (+)
  • Pentax– the model range makes you smile (emphasis on the color options of the case) and is designed for consumers of soap dishes. (-)
  • Ricoh– a number of unsuccessful experiments with mirrorless cameras. (-)
  • Samsung- rushes into the ranks of leaders, releasing models that increasingly frighten competitors. I apologize to Samsung fans, but this is a matter of personal preference - I don’t want a camera with that name (-)
  • Sony– one of the leaders in the mirrorless camera market. Models for every taste and level, including system units with a full-format matrix! (+)

So we decided on the brands: Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony

Now brief thoughts about each and in general (for convenience, a summary table is provided with the necessary data on the preferred models - 410 Kb!, click to enlarge):

Comparative table of mirrorless system cameras, according to selected parameters
  • Fujifilm– X-T1, Fujifilm– X-E2 – top models of excellent quality and consumer characteristics. The main disadvantage is the lack of affordability. The price tag for these models starts around $800-1000. Used ones do not cost much less, since they recently entered the market. One of the available models Fuji X-M1 is still unavailable (12,000 UAH for body). We can only hope for chance - “given without consultation” J
  • Olympus– Olympus has 2 series of excellent mirrorless cameras – PEN and OMD. Both series - high level, although the OMD line is considered a higher class.

The 'Pen E-Px' cameras, where x is the serial number, are considered the senior models of the 'Olympus Pen' line. ‘Pen E-PLx’ - lightweight models (prefix ‘L’ from the word ‘Light’, i.e. ‘Light’). 'Pen E-PMx' - the simplest models in a miniature case (prefix 'M' from the word 'Mini'). Models 'OM-D' - cameras that resemble the old film Olympus OM in appearance, the letter 'D' in the name 'OM-D' means their digital essence ('D' - 'Digital' i.e. 'Digital').

The Micro Four Thirds mount is recognized by experts as the most successful among mirrorless cameras. In addition, the presence of a huge range of optics for this mount makes the purchase of an Olympus mirrorless camera very attractive for professionals. The 4/3″ matrix, almost catching up with the APS-C size, is a compromise option for competition with SLR cameras. Innovative solutions such as five-axis stabilization on the matrix, hybrid contrast-phase autofocus or a 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor without an optical low-pass filter place Olympus system systems among solid market leaders.

  • Panasonic– several series of mirrorless cameras for different consumers:

GF is the youngest and most affordable line. All models are compact and lightweight, without a built-in viewfinder, with a touch screen and a minimum of hardware keys and control dials.

GX is the premium segment of Panasonic's compact mirrorless cameras. There are already a lot more mechanical controls to be seen, the body is of a higher quality, and you can expect at least some kind of battery grip or right-hand ridge.

G is a camera for those who do not want to compromise ergonomics over size. Here you will definitely find an electronic viewfinder, many controls and function keys located on the body. The body will resemble a mini-DSLR with a large handle and a capacious battery.

GH is the top line of MFT mirrorless cameras. It is the latest model of this kind that will be discussed in our review today - the Panasonic GH3.

  • DMC-G:. Models: G1, G2, G10, G3, G5, G6.
  • DMC-GH: Models: GH1, GH2, GH3, GH4
  • DMC-GX: Model: GX1, GX7
  • DMC-GF: Models: GF1, GF2, GF3, GF5.

FujifilmOlympusPanasonicSony- who to give preference to? This question would not be urgent if the purchase were not limited to the amount of $400. If you don’t limit yourself to funds, then purchasing top models from each brand will completely satisfy all the needs of even a discerning photographer:

  • U Fujifilm this is a model XT1 from $1700 per whale
  • U Olympus -OlympusOM-DE-M1— from $1600 per whale
  • U Panasonic - GH4 - from $1900 per whale
  • U Sony -SONYA7MKII, A7R— from $1600 per whale

We will not dwell in detail on the characteristics of these models - they do not fall into our field of choice due to their high cost. What decent (whale) can you choose for $400? But nothing 😀 In this price segment you can only buy system cameras from the Nikon 1 series, which we immediately abandoned because of their small matrix.

What remains is a look at the secondary market for mirrorless cameras. But here the situation is no better - good modern cameras with a rotating touch screen, WI-FI, and viewfinder are not much cheaper than new ones. There remains a choice of obsolete models. It’s not so bad here anymore, and you can pick up a model that was considered the flagship in the line just a couple of years ago.

For example, I managed to find:

  • Sony Alpha 5000– for $282 (Kyiv, Darnitsky ) 2014
  • Fujifilm X-E1 body silver – for $400 (Kyiv) 2012
  • Olympus PEN E-P5 – for $434 (Odessa) 2013
  • PANASONIC G 6 — for $349 (Uzhgorod) 2013
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 kit –$450 (Khmelnitsky) 2010

But only the models came into my field of vision:

  • PANASONIC GM5
  • PANASONIC GX 7
  • PANASONIC G 6
  • PANASONIC G 7
  • Olympus E-PL7
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5
  • Olympus OM-D E-M10
  • Fujifilm X-E1
  • Olympus PEN E-P5
  • Sony NEX-5r, 5t
  • Sony NEX-6
  • SONY A 5100
  • SONY A 6000

Any of these models has a rotating screen, in most cases a touch screen. All models (except Olympus OM-D E-M5 and Fujifilm X-E1) have WI-FI. Most models have an electronic viewfinder. Everyone has a “big” matrix. Also, all models have an advanced external settings control system. Everyone shoots Full HD video. Well main criterion– the quality of photos is not inferior to SLR cameras in the advanced segment!

Approaching the reality of $400, we can say that the most desirable purchase of a kit system camera will be any of the listed Sony cameras (NEX-5 can already be picked up for this money, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, NEX-6 - depending on your luck)

NEX-5R, NEX-5T - essentially a different camera with additional external bodies control, which is closer to the NEX-6 than to the NEX-5. And is one of the most beloved cameras in Japan.

The second priority is the Olympus PEN E-P5 camera. (went out of sale on the same day)

The third contender was the PANASONIC G6, which came very close to our budget.

We can write endlessly about the merits of each chosen model, so we will let the reader evaluate our choice for himself. We have only outlined directions and priorities - the final choice is always up to the user!

If for a film camera the main thing was the quality of the optics and shutter, and the choice of film, developing and printing methods could significantly vary the quality of frames, then with digital camera the first is the matrix: unfortunately, it cannot be changed.

Let's remember a little physics: when working at maximum resolution, each physical pixel corresponds to one pixel in the image. The more actual sizes of this pixel, the better its signal-to-noise ratio will be, the less the image quality will be affected by the neighboring pixels of the matrix and even its cable (it will always collect some kind of interference, especially in a plastic case).

So, the larger the matrix and the fewer pixels on it, the better. But here the need to have a sufficient number of them comes into force, especially if you plan to print pictures in large format or publish photos in high resolution. As for the size of the matrix, the “reference point” is the full frame, in other words, the matrix of the dimensions of a regular frame of small-format photographic film, 24*36 mm. All smaller matrices are described by a crop factor, the ratio of size to full frame - that is, if an FF matrix has a crop factor of 1, then a matrix with a crop factor of 1.5 will be exactly one and a half times smaller. With development modern technologies more than decent quality is provided by APS-C matrices with a 1.5-1.6 crop, Four Thirds (commonly used by Olympus) and even inch matrices with a 2.7 crop. Smaller sizes will require attention, especially those so often used in inexpensive compacts 1/2.3” (crop 6).

Some analogue of photographic film in digital photography is the RAW format - essentially, raw data from the matrix is saved into a file, which opens up wide possibilities for editing the source. Shooting in JPEG is easier, especially for novice photographers, but often the photo is either compressed with an inevitable loss of quality, or “blurred” by software anti-noise, masking the low quality of the matrix.

Let's look at the TOP 3 best mirrorless cameras of 2017 to understand how new technology has moved forward, does it make sense to overpay for a complex filling, or can you entrust all the best things in life to a good old proven DSLR, without bothering with fashion trends.

Sony Alpha A7 II mirrorless camera

This is the second generation of the top A7 series from Sony. The device has remained virtually unchanged in appearance, but has received a built-in image stabilizer, which its younger brother lacked. The latter, we recall, was released as an experiment, to test the market, so to speak, but gained popularity among mere mortals, to whom the device gave the opportunity to feel like real photographers.

  1. Appearance and control. As before, the second generation of the A7 series is positioned by the manufacturer as a replacement for entry-level full-frame DSLRs, which it does with success, but first things first. Despite the fact that the design of the camera has undergone virtually no changes, the weight of the device has increased. Now with dimensions: 126.9x95.7x59.7 mm, this parameter is equal to 559 g. At the same time, ergonomics have improved. Thus, the grip handle fits more tightly in the hand, the shooting button and the front selector dial have been lowered, so it has become more convenient to operate the device, smoothly, as well as taking photographs on the go. In addition, a fourth programmable button has appeared, on which you can set image stabilization. True, there were some flaws. The small and unnecessary key for recording video has not gone anywhere, the selector dial practically does not protrude from the body and is inconvenient to operate, but there are three of them, so with a certain skill you get quite friendly control.
  2. Screen and viewfinder. The device has a 3-inch LCD display with an inclined design and a resolution of 1,228,800 pixels. The interface remains the same, that is, it is made in black, white and yellow colors with horizontal navigation and a quick menu, where all controls are concentrated at the bottom of the screen in a single block. The Live View mode has not gone away, allowing you to overlay a grid, histogram and virtual horizon on the image. The half-inch electronic viewfinder has a fairly high resolution - 2,400,000 dots. It completely covers the frame and essentially duplicates the main screen. You can switch between them using the eye sensor integrated into the eyepiece. The sensor is very sensitive, so if you are not used to it, you can accidentally switch from the main screen to the viewfinder with a simple movement of your finger. Moreover, the first received wider viewing angles, increased brightness, which prevents the display from fading in the sun, but touch control was never implemented.
  3. Functionality. The filling has not changed. It uses a 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor coupled with the BIONZ X processor. The continuous shooting speed has increased to 20 frames per second, the device has become faster to turn on - in one and a half seconds. Autofocus without unpleasant fidgeting and when determining the distance to an object gives a good increase in speed, but the system tends to miss. Manual focusing is not entirely manual, as it involves assistance by zooming the picture, but this is more of a plus than a minus. Other features include five-axis stabilization without stabilization, so that, so to speak, you can feel like a real photographer with an eye for old manual optics. This is, of course, a controversial decision, since it is not enough for a professional, and it will not be easy for a novice photographer to adapt. The shutter turned out to be loud, which means it won’t be possible to remain unnoticed on the street. The shooting modes are trivial: P/A/S/M, iAuto, panorama, video, scene and two custom settings. Separately, it is worth noting the iAuto+ mode, which activates multi-frame composition to eliminate blur and noise in low light. However, there is no built-in flash, that is, you can only use an external solution, purchased separately. The synchronization speed with it is 1/250 of a second. We were pleased with the software capabilities of the Alpha A7 II. Using them, you can stitch together panoramas on the go, eliminate skin defects, crop a portrait, etc. It turns out to be a kind of Photoshop within the camera.
  4. Experts say that the camera’s native lens is mediocre, as it involves plastic optics, but it is enough for “everyone.” The build quality is high and it's a pleasure to work with. The automatic mode is configured more than correctly and sets the white balance and exposure correctly. When shooting continuously with artificial lighting, artifacts cannot be avoided, but then the manual mode comes into its own. In addition, there is noise reduction. Macro photography and portrait mode are beyond praise. Color rendition is a little faded, but it conveys colors naturally without the fanaticism of a DSLR. The output you get is a JPEG or RAW format with a resolution of 7952x5304 pixels, which is not much, but higher than that of its brother.
  5. Video. The mirrorless camera can shoot Full-HD video with FPS up to 60 frames per second and progressive scan (bitrate at 28 Mbit/s). Declared support for AVCHD formats, which is the main one, MP4 and XAVC S. Thus, the video quality borders on professional, but there is no support for 4K, which is depressing, since many are now switching to this high-definition format.
  6. Interfaces. Physical interfaces include USB/AV and HDMI, and wireless interfaces include Wi-Fi and NFC. The camera can be controlled and synchronized with a smartphone, transfer photos to a computer and supports remote printing. There is a headphone output and an input for an external microphone. There is also a built-in stereo microphone.
  7. Autonomy. A lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1050 mAh is responsible for this parameter. The charge is approximately enough for 400 shots, which is not much, especially compared to full-frame DSLR competitors, where the electronics consume less energy.
  8. Additionally. The updated line of branded lenses has been significantly expanded compared to the first generation Alpha A7.
The price of Sony Alpha A7 II in Russia is 100,000 rubles. Video review is presented below:

Fujifilm X-T20 Kit Mirrorless Camera

The camera, like the competitor described above, is an improved version of the flagship Fujifilm X-T2 in a lighter body. At the same time, all the important characteristics remained in place, while the secondary ones disappeared. The result is a balanced device at a more affordable price.
  1. Appearance and control. Externally, the device resembles the previous model, but now you can safely add the prefix “light” to the name. With dimensions of 118.4 x 82.8 x 41.4 mm, the device weighs 383 grams versus 507 grams for the X-T2. This is achieved through the use of magnesium alloy and a more compact filling layout. Among the innovations, the video mode is now on the selector dial, and the exposure compensation dial has been replenished with a “C” symbol, which allows you to activate exposure compensation five steps higher or lower in 1/3 increments. There is also a rocker on the body that turns on the Advanced SR Auto mode and allows you to select its settings. Ergonomics are traditionally excellent; the edges of the device are slightly beveled and allow you to hold the device firmly. The working plane is covered with a rough lining, which allows you to hold the device even in sweaty hands. You can control the aperture using a ring on the optic or use a programmable dial. However, unlike its brother, there is no joystick for controlling focus points, which compensates for the touchscreen main screen, which was not previously present on older models. Also gone is the customizable button that could be used to activate video recording. Now this is the prerogative of the quick menu. Interface software practically remains the same and allows you to use up to 16 functions. In addition, you can display a grid, virtual horizon and histogram on the screen. The main menu is not entirely convenient; for example, setting up and turning on the wireless network are for some reason located in different subsections. The autofocus control is interestingly implemented. So, if the shutter key is pressed halfway, then it is carried out continuously. There is also positioning by eyes, and by the right or left eye separately.
  2. Screen and viewfinder. The new product received an inclined touch screen with a diagonal of three inches. Focus is adjusted by tapping and moving the point to the desired area. The responsiveness of the sensor is excellent, but at the same time it does not accept accidental touches. The display can be deactivated in the settings, that is, there is no automatic switching to the viewfinder. The latter has a resolution of 2.36 million dots, it supports 0.62x zoom, and the image display delay is no more than 0.005 seconds. Together, this increases sharpness; there is a built-in flash, which automatically adjusts its intensity depending on the degree of illumination.
  3. Functionality. The new product has an APS-C matrix with a resolution of 1.04 million pixels and an image stabilizer built into the lens. Autofocusing, thanks to the new zone-phase algorithm, occurs at 0.06 seconds. There are five sets of settings: universal, tracking an object, changing speed and following the nearest object, there is also a sports mode. Continuous shooting speed at 5 frames per second, shutter release with a 0.05-second delay. Overall not bad for a mirrorless camera, but I want better. The processor used is X-Processor Pro, capable of processing 24.3 megapixels of the matrix. It has an extended range feature, which was an option on the previous model but is standard here. The camera comes with one lens with a 35mm focal length. There are no complaints about the quality, besides, it is lightweight and is aimed at both close-up photography and portraits. It does not promise unprecedented zoom.
  4. Filming quality and testing. Now the device supports 4K video, but the image resolution remains the same - 6000x4000 pixels. Traditionally, for mirrorless cameras, priority is set to automatic mode, and here it is implemented perfectly. Among the features worth noting are multiple exposures, as well as three drive options and two types of bracketing. Thus, high-quality pictures are obtained in any lighting, but panorama and macro are better taken in manual mode. Also, ordinary users will like professional effects, for which two divisions are allocated on the selector.
  5. Interfaces. The set of interfaces is standard - HDMI, USB, 2.5 mm connector for an external microphone or remote control. You can share photos and control the camera using your smartphone via Wi-Fi.
  6. Autonomy. The battery is rated for 500 shots, aided by a 1200 mAh capacity. It is completely identical to the energy source of its younger brother.
  7. Additionally. Among other features, it is worth noting the film simulation mode, that is, the artificial addition of several types of grain, as in retro photos and negatives.
The price of Fujifilm X-T20 Kit in Russia is 65,000 rubles. More detailed information about the gadget, see below:

Mirrorless camera Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G7KS

A high-quality mirrorless camera does not have to be expensive, and this is once again proven by the LUMIX DMC-G7KS, which combines balanced characteristics, an ergonomic body and good optics.
  1. Appearance and control. The camera immediately attracts the eye with its massive body, but this form factor is not accidental. Of course, this is not an action solution, but the device is held in the hand confidently, not without the help of a protruding handle. large sizes. The build quality is excellent, the controls are in place, there is a drive mode dial, as well as a pop-up flash that supports hot swapping. Dimensions of the device: 124.9x86.2x77.4 mm, weight - 410 g when fully equipped.
  2. Screen and viewfinder. The display uses a 3-inch LCD matrix with large viewing angles. At the same time, the sensor is not afraid of strong pressure. Color rendition is rich but correct, brightness is moderate, but the screen does not fade in the sun. The display can be rotated in two planes, which is convenient for shooting from an upper or lower angle, as well as professional-level selfies. The graphical interface deserves special attention; even an inexperienced user can understand it. The layout of the settings elements is intuitive, there are hints, so the manual will only be needed as a last resort. In addition, there is a 2360k dot OLED color viewfinder that would be the envy of any DSLR camera. The color rendition in it is natural, the viewing angles are one hundred percent. You can duplicate menus and other things on the viewfinder Additional information. Among the features is an integrated proximity sensor that automatically turns off the main screen.
  3. Functionality. The device has a 16-megapixel Live-MOS matrix, powered by the Venus Engine 9 processor. There is 49-zone autofocus without phase elements, but object positioning occurs instantly, although at long distances the object can jump. The continuous shooting speed is 6 frames per second, and even in low light the picture is not blurry. This is the case when manual mode is better than automatic, since the latter is very proprietary and minimally uses the camera’s potential. Most users will not have to change the interchangeable lens, since it has a universal focal length, optimal for macro and landscapes. In reality, it varies from 14 to 42 mm, which corresponds to 25–700 “magazine” millimeters.
  4. Filming quality and testing. The electronic shutter fires literally in 1/16000 s, allowing you to capture even the flight of a bumblebee. There is support not only for 4K photos, but also for video. The latter is obtained with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels and FPS at 60 frames per second (bitrate 100 Mbit/s). The maximum photo resolution is 4592x3448 pixels. The photos turn out sharp with saturated colors, one might even say very saturated, but this “problem” can be solved in the settings by selecting the appropriate mode. Intelligent flash control is not provided, but it copes with its direct task perfectly, it’s a pity there is no hot swap.
  5. Interfaces. The set of interfaces includes HDMI, USB/TV-out, external microphone. It is possible to connect a wired remote control, but it is better to use Wi-Fi and a smartphone. Yes, wireless network support is also present. The camera connects instantly, there are no compatibility problems. The mobile application is implemented for both iOS and Android.
  6. Autonomy. There is an 8.7 Wh battery, which is enough for 360 shots or 200 photos, ten minutes of 4K video, two minutes of HD video and a dozen two-second bursts in high resolution mode. Not the best, but good result for a mirrorless camera.
  7. Additionally. The main feature of the model is honest 4K for both photos and videos. No imitations, digital decoders and for very reasonable money.
The price of Fujifilm X-T20 Kit in Russia is 52,000 rubles.

The TOP 3 best mirrorless cameras of 2017 presented in our review prove that they can match the quality of DSLR competitors, while the user does not need to be a professional photographer, since to become one they only need to set everything up once, switch the mode and press one button. Of course, you won’t get a masterpiece for the exhibition, although this is not excluded, but at the end you will get the latest 4K and a lot of positive emotions. One thing that's sad is the price, but why overpay for something you don't need. For example, Sony Alpha A7 II is already a semi-professional solution for people seeking to get into photography, and the brand itself has had a significant influence on the price tag. Fujifilm X-T20 Kit is the “golden mean” with many settings, an application for professional photos with changing lenses and complicated controls that compensate for the automatic mode.

Thus, the most the best option for everyone will be the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G7KS, which fully justifies its cost and allows you to simply take high-quality photographs without the hassles and subtleties of a “bearded” photographer.

Recently, full-frame mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses have become popular around the world. People often choose this type of photographic equipment. This rating, which was compiled in 2017, as well as a large number of positive reviews confirm these words. The cameras are easy to use and functional.

The creators achieved this thanks to the rapid development of modern technologies, which are actively used in the development of new models. So what is it without reflex camera?

Mirrorless cameras are not much different from DSLR devices. The main feature of such cameras is that they lack an optical viewfinder and a block of mirrors. But all other parameters that attract buyers remained unchanged.

Mirrorless optics have an accurate and fast operating mode, the matrix is of impressive size, interchangeable lenses are provided in large quantities and have many different functions. In most models, such functions are of a high technical level and quality. But the advantages of full-frame mirrorless cameras don't end there. Compared with SLR camera they are compact in size and light in weight. This makes the device mobile and makes it possible to take the camera with you on a trip or on an excursion.

Below are the best mirrorless devices according to the 2017 rating.

Panasonic Lumix g5 (review)

Is a true digital evolution. The top-best with an interchangeable lens is a model developed by Panasonic. Four years ago, customers were introduced to the first model of this digital line called Panasonic Lumix G1. The camera’s functions are quite good, and the device itself has earned great popularity among both professional photographers and beginners . Interestingly, after the release of the model G3 the company immediately released Lumix G5. The G4 model was simply not released for sale, and the reason for this was the superstitiousness of the Japanese organization Panasonic.

Benefits of Lumix G5

Everyone will find a wide variety of reviews on the Internet. and reviews that are dedicated to this camera model with interchangeable lenses. Owners pay special attention to design: strict style, smooth lines, calm colors. The shape of the G5 camera is made for user convenience. The large protrusion is designed to make it comfortable and convenient to hold the device in your hands. The flash, viewfinder and many buttons are reminiscent of a DSLR camera.

Price – approximately 22,000 rubles. This is a relatively small cost for a good mirrorless camera.

A camera is a piece of equipment whose cost can vary from several thousand to a couple of million rubles (for example, a medium format Hasselblad H4D-60 costs 40 thousand dollars). Therefore, in order for our rating to be of interest to a wide range of readers, and not just those with an unlimited budget, we decided to make price/quality ratio the main selection criterion.

In this article you will not see another debate on which camera is better - Canon or Nikon, SLR or mirrorless, cropped or full-frame, but will get a selection of cameras tested by thousands of users, the purchase of each of which will be successful. Now let's move on to the rating of cameras by image quality in 2017.

SLR Cameras

For reference: a full-frame camera has a matrix measuring 36*24 mm, a cropped one – 23.6*15.8.

FF is capable of producing better images at high ISOs and gives more control over depth of field, while crop benefits from a more affordable price.

Full frame cameras

A full-frame camera with a 36*24 mm sensor was previously a luxury that only professional photographers could afford. Nowadays, full frames can often be seen in the hands of amateurs; they are bought not only for commerce, but also for the soul. If you want to buy an FF and know exactly why you need it, we recommend paying attention to the following models.

Canon 5D Mark 4

5D-M4 is a professional camera that replaced the popular 5D-M3. The most talked about new product of 2016 did not disappoint expectations: the Kenon 5D-M4 acquired a new 30.4 MP sensor, an improved focusing system, a set of various wireless sensors (Wi-Fi + NFC, GPS) and the ability to record video in 4K resolution.

In all other respects, it is still the same reliable workhorse for professionals, with minor improvements on all fronts. The 5D Mark 4 can be recommended to most commercial photographers; it is suitable for all genres - from portraiture and advertising to reportage photography and videography. Price – from 190 thousand rubles.

Nikon D750

Nikon D750 is an excellent universal full frame with moderate resolution (24.3 MP), high continuous shooting speed (up to 6.5 fps) and very tenacious autofocus. Among the advantages of the D750, we note a rotating screen, trouble-free operation at high ISO ( complete absence noise level up to 6400), the presence of two slots for memory cards, a Wi-Fi module and good battery life.

Disadvantages - the minimum shutter speed limit is limited to 1/4000, slow focusing in LiveView mode and a small information display. But nevertheless, it is a well-balanced camera that can be considered an excellent choice for anyone wanting to get acquainted with full frame. Price – from 110 thousand rubles.

Sony A99

The A99 is a camera whose unique feature is the use of a translucent mirror, thanks to which engineers were able to implement autofocus in video mode, which, in addition to the presence of a built-in stabilizer, makes the A99 one of the best full-frame DSLRs for video shooting.

When it comes to photography, the A99 is no slouch; the camera produces excellent image quality, with pleasant color reproduction, excellent detail and dynamic range, but at the same time it is inferior to its counterparts from Canon and Nikon in terms of autonomy and the effectiveness of autofocus tracking. Price – from 125 thousand rubles.

Canon 6D Mark

Canon 6D is the most affordable full frame on the market, which can rightfully be considered “people's frame”. The 6D is made of a magnesium alloy body, its dimensions are more compact than those of professional DSLRs, but there are no complaints about the device in terms of ergonomics. As well as in terms of the quality of high ISO performance, it is at the level of its older brothers.

But it was not without its drawbacks: so that the 6D did not compete with the 5D line, it cut down the focusing system (only 11 points of which 1 is cross-shaped), left 1 slot for a flash drive and limited the buffer size (7 RAW frames) and burst speed (4.5 k/s). Despite all the disadvantages, there are no analogues to 6D among full frames, since in its face a full frame can be obtained for only 70-80 thousand rubles.

Cropped cameras

Despite all the attractiveness of the full frame, it is most rational to start getting acquainted with photography with cropped cameras. And the following models are best suited for this.

Nikon D3300

Nikon D3300 is an excellent amateur camera, time-tested. Nikons of the D3300 series have everything that a novice photographer might need: the device copes well with noise at ISO range up to 3200, has a decent dynamic range that gives full possibilities for photo post-processing, and tenacious 11-point autofocus (there is also a rangefinder for manual focusing).

The disadvantages include the lack of an automatic HDR mode and a Wi-Fi module, which does not allow you to control the shutter release from a smartphone or synchronize the device with a PC to transfer files. But considering all the above advantages and the price of 30 thousand rubles, the disadvantages are not critical. If you are looking for an inexpensive and good DSLR camera, you can safely take the D3300.

Canon 750D

The 750D is one of Canon's flagship models in the amateur segment. The camera has a 24 MP matrix with 19 focusing points (all cross-shaped), a rotating touch screen and a Wi-Fi module. The 750D can be praised for its high-quality noise reduction, thanks to which the pictures have acceptable detail up to ISO 6400, and excellent rate of fire - 5 fps, a buffer of 8 shots, which allows you to use the camera for reporting purposes.

Disadvantages - flimsy plastic body and the inability to record Full HD video with frame rates above 30 FPS. Price – from 40 thousand rubles.

Nikon D500

The D500 is a professional-level cropped camera designed for reportage photography. The D500 inherits many of the features of the top-end D5, in particular it can shoot at speeds of up to 10 fps and has an advanced 153-point focusing system that allows you to get high-quality shots of any dynamic scenes.

Among the advantages of the D500 are a quiet sensor with a really working ISO 6400, lightning-fast operating speed, a rotating touch screen, a large and bright viewfinder, as well as advanced control and configuration options. Price – from 130 thousand rubles.

Canon 7D Mark 2

The 7D Mark ll is an excellent choice for commercial photography. The camera, housed in a protected housing, has a professional autofocus system (65 cross points) and a viewfinder with 100% frame coverage. Among the main advantages are a high level of working ISO (up to 3200), flawlessly working exposure metering and natural color rendition.

Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses

If you are buying a camera “for the hobby”, then it makes sense to choose mirrorless cameras, which are much more convenient due to their compact dimensions, but at the same time are practically not inferior to DSLRs in terms of photo quality, and are far ahead in terms of video recording capabilities.

Sony A7 II

The Sony A7 II is a professional-level full-frame mirrorless camera that claims to be the best BZK on the market. The camera is equipped with a 24 MP matrix, a hybrid autofocus system (117 phase and 25 contrast sensors) and a 5-axis matrix image stabilization system.

A7-II without special problems allows you to get a “cinema” picture when recording video, which is recorded in 4K, 2K and Full HD formats (24-50 FPS), and does not give up when shooting photos - the matrix feels good at ISO up to 6400. Price - from 230 thousand. rubles

Panasonic G7

If you want to make great videos, but are not ready to pay 230 thousand for a Sony A7-ll, then the Panasonic G7 is your choice. This is the most affordable UPC with the ability to record video in 4K (24/25/30 FPS), which boasts a tenacious and fast autofocus of 49 points, a folding screen and a Wi-Fi module.

However, for high quality video (and it’s really excellent here) has to sacrifice photo capabilities. Pictures taken on the G7 often lack detail, and the matrix is noisy even at ISO 1600. But all this is covered by the price, which is only 50-60 thousand rubles.

Fujifilm X-T2

The X-T2 is Fujifilm's flagship mirrorless camera and can be considered one of the most technologically advanced hybrid cameras on the market. The X-T2 is strong both in photography (excellent detail and color rendition) and in video shooting (4K): it is equipped with a 325-point autofocus system that confidently copes with any shooting scenarios, and can shoot at a frequency of up to 15 frames per second .

Among the advantages of the X-T2 are a beautiful design and a body protected from dust and moisture, long battery life on a single charge, and decent picture quality at high ISO ranges. There are no shortcomings as such, we will only note small controls that will be difficult for those with large hands to handle. Price – from 110 thousand rubles.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 II

In the budget UPC segment, the king of the show is the E-M10ll, which outperforms its competitors in terms of functionality and balance of characteristics. The device is made in a metal case with a retro stylization, the matrix resolution is 16 MP, the pictures are very warm and bright, with pleasant color rendering in both RAW and JPEG, without any post-processing. Working ISO up to 3200.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We included the E-M10ll in our rating as a universal choice for any beginning amateur photographer and people who do not want to pay exorbitant amounts of money for a camera. This is a beautiful camera with excellent image quality, which can be bought for only 35-40 thousand rubles.

Compact cameras

The compact camera segment is extremely diverse, in it you can find everything from banal point-and-shoot cameras costing several thousand to premium full-frame cameras that cost more than professional full-frame SLRs. This is the camera that starts our rating.

Sony Cyber-Shot RX1R II

The price of Sony RX1R II is a crazy 290 thousand rubles. The camera is capable of surprising with a 42 MP matrix, a 35/2.0 Carl Zeiss Sonar T lens, an electronic viewfinder, a tilting touch screen and Wi-Fi. And of course – the best autofocus system among compacts and a huge dynamic range (maximum working ISO 6400).

In terms of photography, the RX1R II is excellent, the picture is bright, rich and detailed, even when shooting a camera JPEG, but with video it’s not so smooth. The device cannot record in 4K and cannot boast of autofocus in video shooting mode. In general, for street photography, subject to an unlimited budget, this is just the thing.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100

The Lumix DMC-LX100 is notable for its Leica lens (24-75 mm f/1.7-f/2.8 zoom) and the ability to record video in 4K, which is extremely rare among compacts. In all other respects, this is a perfectly balanced camera with a full range of technological features (viewfinder, Wi-Fi, numerous mechanical controls, a fast processor that allows you to shoot at up to 11 fps).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In our opinion, if you are satisfied with the focal length of the built-in lens, it is better to choose the DMC-LX100 than the DSLR/BZK + lens kit. Thus, you will benefit from ease of use (dimensions, weight), and in addition you will be able to save a lot of money. Price - from 49 thousand rubles and a well-deserved rating of 5 points in terms of price/quality ratio.

Fuji X70

The X70 is equipped with a fixed Fujinon 28/2.8 lens, which allows you to take pictures of amazing quality - both in terms of sharpness and color rendition. This is an excellent camera for street photography, which has a compact size and fast automation, which makes it possible to take the camera out of your pocket and take a photo in a matter of seconds.

Among the advantages of the X70 are design, convenient controls, wide dynamic range and decent working ISO (3200). Disadvantages: lack of a viewfinder and image stabilization system. Price – from 40 thousand rubles.

Olympus TG-4

The Olympus TG-4 is a relatively cheap compact, an excellent choice for people whose main hobby is photography. The TG-4 is ideal for any operating conditions, from everyday photography to extreme vacation photography, which the camera will withstand with dignity thanks to its dust- and moisture-protected housing (shooting at a depth of up to 15 meters is possible).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Among the pleasant little things, we highlight RAW support, optical stabilization, fast and accurate autofocus, the presence of Wi-Fi and GPS modules, as well as the ability to shoot in aperture priority mode with manual ISO settings, which allows you to squeeze maximum photo quality out of the TG-4 in low light. Cons: Mediocre video quality. Price – from 21 thousand rubles.
