The first Lanos was presented by the Korean company Daewoo at the Geneva Motor Show, but development began much earlier, in 1993. The paintwork and metal of the body elements are of rather poor quality, as a result, corrosion on the car body appears after 3-5 years of operation. Most often, rust appears on the arches, sills, door edges, front of the hood and trunk lid. Therefore, in order to protect the car from the effects of corrosion, it is recommended to treat the body and bottom with anti-corrosion agents at least once every 3-4 years. Over time, moisture appears in the cabin and trunk, and there are also complaints about the durability of the trunk lock.

Engines

For the entire production period, the Chevrolet Lanos was equipped with only a 1.5 liter gasoline power unit with a capacity of 86 hp. One of the most common problems with this engine is considered to be oil leakage through the cylinder head gasket (the gasket needs to be replaced every 30-40 thousand km). The motor is equipped with a timing belt drive, with a service replacement interval every 60,000 km. However, it is better not to delay the replacement and carry it out a little earlier, since after 50,000 km there is a high probability of a belt break, which leads to serious consequences (bends the valves). Many owners, in order to save money, refuel with low-quality fuel, this leads to rapid clogging and premature failure of the fuel pump.

Often surprises and the cooling system - the radiator ceases to function, the pump and thermostat fail. If the malfunction is not detected in time, this can lead to overheating of the motor, and, in the future, to costly repairs (leads the cylinder head). The sensors of the injection system, absolute pressure, throttle position and lambda probe are not famous for their reliability. A fairly common problem, when the engine starts to work unstably (XX revolutions are walking), to fix the problem, it is necessary to replace the idle speed sensor. Transmission

Chevrolet Lanos was equipped only with a five-speed manual transmission, which was not an alternative. Most of the complaints here relate not so much to reliability and durability as to its user characteristics. Most often, the transmission is criticized for fuzzy gear shifting and noisy operation. If the box started to buzz a lot, try to change the oil every 30,000 km, this procedure improves the situation a little, but does not completely solve the problem. Once every 50-60 thousand km, adjustment of the backstage is required, which becomes loose for no particular reason. The biggest plus of the Chevrolet Lanos chassis is that its repair is quite cheap, and if you have even the slightest idea about the structure of the chassis car, you can do it yourself.

The KIA Spectra and Daewoo Lanos reincarnated in Izhevsk and Zaporozhye - just such, "not one hundred percent" foreign cars - occupy worthy places in the sales ratings. Comparable in price to Russian cars, both models are rapidly luring to their side those who have been driving the “classic” or the 10th Zhiguli family all their lives.

However, their prices are not the limit: the Ukrainian ZAZ went even further. Having made several changes to the package, he turned it into a ZAZ Sens, and lowered the cost of a new foreign car below 230,000 rubles.

But are miracles possible? Is it realistic to "squeeze" the cost, keeping in the car everything that foreign-made cars are valued in Russia for? Comparing the three cars, we tried to find out where the line goes, beyond which the savings on the car ends to the detriment of ourselves.

Probably, knowing about the vociferousness of the Melitopol unit, the creators of Sens considered it possible to abandon the tachometer. Otherwise, in terms of instruments, it is parity: the readings are easy to read thanks to the modest design and neutral backlighting.

The back seat of geometrically identical cars can be accommodated comfortably - especially if a person of average (or slightly taller) height is sitting behind the wheel.

There is enough space in front of the knees so as not to rest against them. However, the rear sofa for three is frankly cramped.

Vibrations and noises in the Sens, which appear after turning the key in the ignition and increase significantly on the go, suggest not a foreign car, but an old lawn mower. It is the old one - the new ones are quieter.

The Melitopol unit is frisky on the bottoms, so extreme sportsmen will like it: if you turn the wheels and “stomp” on the gas pedal, you get an imitation of a rodeo. Keep under a furious Melitopol engine is not so easy! If you arrange a paired race of Lanos and Sens, then in second gear the latter will even go ahead for a short while, but in third the more powerful Chevrolet will start to break away.

As already mentioned, the acoustic comfort in Lanos is much higher, vibrations and extraneous noise from the 86-horsepower engine are minimized. The motor itself provides smooth acceleration, slowly accelerating the sedan to a maximum of 170 km / h. All the way, the arrows on the speedometer scale keep the wheels firmly in a straight line and do not scour in search of a better trajectory.

Transfers in Sens are included indistinctly and not always. The gear lever requires a rude and undiplomatic attitude: in this case, the percentage of successful shift attempts will be higher. In addition, it is tilted back, closer to the driver; second gear is barely at odds with the driver's seat and the parking brake raised. Another thing is that the "handbrake" and "second" are rarely used at the same time.

The Lanos gearbox is also not a model of clarity, but there are no design flaws either: compared to a less expensive rival, the neutral position of the lever is no problem, and the gears are engaged on demand.

Another difference between Sens: it is difficult to turn the steering wheel without power steering even for a strong and muscular person. And it's even harder to do it at speed. The hydraulic booster largely determined the different impressions from both "Ukrainians", distributing "plus" and "minus" between them. In Sens, after a car with power steering, it’s better not to sit down!

We did not find any differences in the brakes and suspension - especially since they are identical. Brakes are average. Compared to the KIA Spectra, it may seem that they are inefficient, this is rather due to the peculiarities of the Izhevsk model, the story of which is ahead.

The fact that the Sens suspension was taken from Lanos without changes is correct: in terms of balancing comfort and stability, the running gear of both “Ukrainians” deserves good marks. There are rolls, but they do not particularly affect handling; small and small holes are absorbed quietly, but hard. Both cars easily go into a skid, but also easily get out of it.

Like the "new Ukrainian" KIA, it does not flaunt its edgy "exterior". The calm lines of a small, by American standards, sedan hint at the era of the conquest of the New World by the Japanese auto industry. No wonder: this is the task set by the Korean company a decade ago!

However, this is to our advantage - the modest appearance of the Spectra for many years will not stand out from the stream either by beauty or ugliness.

And again - "Japanese America": smooth dash lines, additional digitization of the speedometer in miles, a two-din radio compartment. There is no radio itself, but audio preparation has been made and there is even an electric antenna (!) On the rear wing.

A scattering of buttons is quite reasonably and ergonomically interspersed in the "beard" and around the steering wheel space, but the "joystick" of the electric drives of the mirrors is located in the very place where the "Germans" control the external light is located - inconvenient and illogical. However, this place would still be empty.

External lighting is turned on by turning the “knob” of the left steering column switch and, according to the tradition that has developed in the Korean company, works on the “turn on and forget” principle. Literally: after the driver turned off the engine and opened the door, the “smart” electronics turn off the headlights and dimensions on their own. And such a solution fits perfectly into the concept of Spectra.

Sufficiently soft chairs hint at the possibility of relaxing behind the wheel. The general impression of spaciousness in the cabin is also confirmed by other factors: there is no “elbow feeling” in the front row, and the passengers of the second row do not rest on their feet. Yes, and light upholstery visually increases the space.

In such an atmosphere, the average quality of the plastic does not irritate, especially since the main plastic part in the car - the steering wheel - fits well in the hands and is pleasant to the touch. The selector lever of the “machine” moving along the archaic “straight” slot does not cause any complaints.

The Korean-American-Udmurt Spectra, taken into the company of Asian-Ukrainians, in comparison seems to be the standard of comfort. On board there is a full power package and air conditioning, and an automatic transmission is hidden in the depths of the structure.

Passive and active safety is enhanced by ABS, a height-adjustable steering column and two airbags that insure the driver and front passenger.

But the price is also matched by the equipment and the larger dimensions of the car. "Our" Spectra is estimated at more than 430,000 rubles. However, this is a top-end equipment, but even a “base” with a manual transmission costs fifty thousand rubles more than the most expensive one.

In motion, this KIA is a continuation of the “in-salon” impressions. The sedan "on the handle" accelerates to 100 km / h in 12 seconds, but a car with automatic transmission spends one and a half seconds more on this.

However, the car suffers not because of the motor. He messed up the "automatic", which suffers from jerks when switching, delays when trying to accelerate and unpredictable downshifts, which are standard for outdated hydromechanical gearboxes.

On the other hand, changing gears without the participation of the driver is a luxury not available to other test participants. And the sluggish acceleration rhythm is a small price to pay for calmness and relaxation behind the wheel. However, as sellers notice, this “automatic” is not in demand - especially since with it the car clearly goes beyond the budget.

In the handling exercises, the Spectra is again a typical "American": lazy, sedate ... The car reacts sluggishly to steering turns, but, having stood on the arc, it holds it well.

And most of all I liked its powerful brakes. Perhaps they are even too sharp: those driving behind may not have time to react, and the “pecking” of the body will certainly not please the passengers.

Zaz Chance is a budget car with front-wheel drive. It is produced by the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant (ZAZ). The choice of buyers is provided in the version of a sedan and hatchback. The car received this name for the Russian consumer. It is known to Ukrainian buyers as ZAZ Lanos. Another car is popular as Chevrolet Lanos and Daewoo Lanos. At home, in Ukraine, Lanos is the undisputed leader in sales, and for the past five years. The history of the model dates back to 1997. The entire range of ZAZ.

Appearance

Since 2009, the ZAZ Chance model has become available to Russians. Over the years, the car has not changed much. If we take modern standards, then, of course, the appearance of Chance is a bit boring. The model received rounded body shapes that converge in style with drop-like headlights and taillights.

Appearance stepped forward, making the ZAZ a more modern car. Solid metal body, load-bearing type. It looks nice, and the fitting of body parts and panels is at a good level. 17 mm clearance allows you to easily "swallow" light pits and potholes. Comes with small wheels R13-R14.

Interior

ZAZ Chance purchased slightly different chairs. Now the seats have lateral support. But the steering wheel still does not have any adjustments for either reach or height. Objectively speaking, there is not much free space in the car, and therefore tall people may not be very comfortable both behind the wheel and in the passenger seats.

The entire front panel is made of hard plastic, as is the skin of the front cards. The panel is cast from a monolithic piece, which discards all sorts of squeaks that are absent even on used cars. In the basic version, the mirrors are manually adjustable and there are no power windows. Having gone to the rear seats, you will notice that it is a bit cramped here both in height and in the knees.

But two people of average height and size will feel quite comfortable. The driver's seat is not adjustable in height, but only in length. The controls got their logical location. We were pleased with the additional air ducts for the rear passengers, which undoubtedly makes him a compliment.

COLD MEETING

The day did not start in the morning. Having safely arrived at the training ground on the editorial "Lanos", I was waiting for a colleague with a brand new "Chance" for quite a long time. The problem is not in it: in the cold it didn’t start right away ... the car carrier, which was supposed to deliver a commercial car without license plates. The cold "Chance", fortunately, came to life, but at first went, howling engine and transmission. Will it start the next frosty morning? .. For now, let's look through the description of the most expensive configuration of the SX. Funny instructions. Try to understand from the message "power steering" what kind of power steering is there. Electric front window regulator. One? Checked - of course, two. "Speakers - two in the front and standard in the back." Ahead, not otherwise, subwoofers ... But the most interesting and absolutely understandable data: the price of the car is 270 thousand rubles, and for a modification with a 1.3-liter engine (there is also a 1.5-liter one), this is the maximum!

Externally, the Lanos and Chance sedans are twins, the difference is only in the shape of the lights and the inscriptions on the trunk lid. There are more differences inside. Getting behind the wheel of a Chevrolet, while maintaining a proud posture, is not easy: the seat is too low. However, it is comfortable to sit in it. But it is uncomfortable in the cabin - everything seems to be in place, but at least some decor is clearly missing. Is that the silver lining on the top of the panel pleases the eye.

It is easier to get a job in the Zaporizhzhya "Chance": the chair was installed higher here. This advantage turned into a disadvantage. A large steering wheel of not the most successful shape covers the entire upper part of the shield - the instruments are not visible. There are no seat height adjustments. The rear sofa is comfortable both in terms of rigidity and inclination of the back. The trunk is quite roomy, the configuration and volume is the same as that of the Chevrolet.

CADET AND COSSACK

Overboard minus thirty. However, the cars started up in the morning, synchronously reporting this with a whistle of bearings. True, Lanos has already run more than 60 thousand, and on the odometer of Chance there are not even 30 kilometers. Leaving for the test track, Zaporozhye newcomer shamefully stalled several times. You need to get used to the operation of the clutch and the characteristics of the motor: the gear ratio of the first gear was chosen unsuccessfully. To start, the 1.3-liter Melitopol engine had to be turned, allowing the clutch to slip. But then the “dvigun” (as it is written on the plate under the hood - it reads “dvygun”, this is in Ukrainian) rehabilitated itself: it accelerated the car rather cheerfully, allowing it to maintain a quite energetic pace. Annoyed, perhaps, only a narrow traction range - I had to switch gears that were still tight more often. And yet, against the background of the newcomer, Lanos with a 1.5-liter engine that served in Opel's Cadets, it seems almost a sports car. This one will not stall at the start, and confident traction allows you to reach the gearshift lever less often. The rest of the cars are hard to distinguish. Moderately comfortable suspension, tolerable power steering performance; brakes could be called good, if not for the lack of ABS.

ZAZ Chance, although not flawless, is ready to pick up the banner of a decent and affordable car, which Chevrolet Lanos once raised.

Having driven enough on snow-covered paths, I compared the cars on dry and clean asphalt. We were not going to overclock opponents to maximum speed, it is more interesting to evaluate the dynamics and noise at a speed of about 100 km/h. On the Chance, up to 60 km / h, the main noise was created by the wheels and the whistle of the wind, and with increasing speed, the engine drowns out everything with a long, hysterical roar.

"Lanos" accelerates much more willingly, goes to the credit one hundred much earlier. The motor is much quieter here; the basis of the acoustic background is aerodynamic noise and the rustling of studded tires.

Concluding the acquaintance, I remembered the Chevrolet-Lanos advertising slogan: "Everything you need from a car, and nothing more." Perhaps this is true - an unpretentious car fully corresponds to this motto: moderately comfortable, moderately powerful and, most importantly, inexpensive.

What about "Chance"? In general, "translation into Ukrainian" did not spoil the successful model. It also made it more accessible. But for this class, the price is the most important argument that compensates for minor flaws.
